Albright Advances to Semifinals; Breaks School Record for Wins

READING, Pa. -- Freshman Sophie Bass scored four goals and Albright used a late 3-0 run to edge Lycoming 16-15 in the opening round of the MAC Commonwealth Tournament on Monday at Shirk Stadium.

With the victory, Albright improved to 11-6 on the season to break the school record for wins in a season. The previous record was 10 wins set by the 2013 team.

Albright advances to the semifinals of the MAC Commonwealth Tournament where it will face top-seeded Messiah at 4 p.m. on Wednesday (May 4).

Playing its first home game in MAC Commonwealth Tournament history, the Lions had to stage a dramatic second-period rally.

Albright overcame a 9-4 halftime deficit behind the play of Bass and Jacqui Montague each who tallied three goals in the second period.

Lycoming, which finished its season with a 12-5 overall record, held an 11-5 lead after Kelly McGinniss scored on a free position goal with 28:44 to play in the game.

Danielle Carey began the comeback with an unassisted goal at the 26:04 mark and Montague trimmed the deficit to 11-7 with 25:43 to play in the game.

Erin Farrell scored her 50th goal of the season on a free position shot and Bass scored off a pass from Amanda Smith to bring the Lions to within 11-9 with 23:40 left to play.

Mariah Cullen then brought Albright to within 11-10 on an unassisted goal at the 22:22 mark of the second period.

McGinniss, who tallied seven goals, responded with a goal to increase the Lycoming lead to 12-10 with 19:26 to play in the game.

Bass then scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 12-12 and Montague gave Albright its first lead of the contest at 13-12 with 11:41 left in the contest.

Lycoming responded with goals from McGinniss and Lazarich to regain the lead at 14-13 with 8:38 left to play.

Farrell kick started the Lions game-winning 3-0 run with an unassisted goal at the 7:21 mark of the period that tied the game at 14-14.

Smith scored on a free position shot giving the Lions a 15-14 lead, and Corinne Donohue scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal off a feed from Montague with 2:39 to play.

Leanne Shaw scored for Lycoming to cut the lead to 16-15, but the Lions would eventually run out the clock to seal the victory.

Hayley Joyce played the final 30 minutes in goal for Albright and notched her third win of the season by making five saves, while Nicole Gerling absorbed the loss for Lycoming despite making 13 saves.
