Women's Soccer Falls to No. 1 Messiah in Conference Tournament

Box Score

GRANTHAM, Pa. - In their first Commonwealth Conference tournament appearance since 2006, the Lady Lions traveled to Messiah College to face the number one seed Falcons Tuesday evening at Shoemaker Field. A total of seven player accounted for Messiah's offense as they recorded an 8-0 victory.

Tuesday's semi-final match-up was the second ever between the two programs, and marked the 10th consecutive semi-final game for the host Falcons.

Messiah riding an 11 game win streak going into the match dominated the offensive play of Tuesday's semi-final. Albright's defenses tried to limit the Falcons' chances but were unable to contain an offense that has outscored their opponents 86-5 this season.

Goalkeeper #Olivia Giuliano# who started the match made some huge saves to keep the Falcons off the scoreboard for as long as she could. Unfortunately, Messiah did not take long to end the scoreless draw as they put up their first score of the match in the opening five minutes.

Through the first 25 minutes of play, Messiah tacked on three more goals to take a 4-0 lead. Albright was held to just one shot in the first 45 minutes of play, while the Falcons totaled 10 of their own. Moving into the second half, Albright continued to play in their defensive third.

Messiah would waste little time in the second half to extend their lead scoring their fifth goal of the match in the opening minutes. They then put two more goals on the scoreboard to jump out to a 7-0 lead before the 70th minute mark.

With less than 10 minutes to go, Messiah added their final tally of the match securing the 8-0 win over the red and white.

Albright's offense which was held to just two shots on the night was completely neutralized by the solid play of the Falcons midfield and defense. Any Albright clear was quickly turned into a Falcons counter attack which proved to be the deciding factor for Messiah.

With the win the Falcons will host Arcadia University in the Commonwealth Conference championship game on Saturday, while the Lions season comes to an end with a record of 8-9-3, 3-3-1 in the conference.

Tuesday's contest also marked the final match in the careers of senior members #Allie Yoder#, #Gloria Alfonsi#, #Kim Spataro#, #Lindsay Kurtz#, and #Amy Hoelscher#.
