Track and Field Hits the Ground Running at Ursinus Indoor Classic

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The 2009-10 Indoor Track and Field season got off to a great start Saturday morning at Ursinus College. Sophomore runner George Cook in his 5,000 meter event of the season broke the school record with a time of 16:20.44 to finish in fifth place in the event.

Overall the men's team placed 12th out of 18 teams, and the women's team finished in 15th place out of a field of 18 teams as well.

To get the day started off Shannon Loos took 16th place in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.97. She was joined by Taylor Kutz in 19th place with her final time of 8.04 seconds. For the men's 55 meter dash, newcomer DeAndre Moore crossed the finish line with a time of 7.36 to earn a 39th place finish.
Loos also earned a sold finish for the lady Lions in the women's 400 meter dash crossing the finish line with a time of 1:04.81. Right behind her in 24th place (1:05.01) was Kutz and Shannon's sister Meghan Loss in 25th place (1:05.45).

Also picking up a top-20 finish was Erika Snyder who closed out the 800 meter run with a time of 2:43.96 and 18th place finish. Robert Kellert, Peter Ferlita and Dan Dalton finished in 28th, 29th, and 30th place respectively in the men's 800 meter run.

Moving into the mile run, sophomore Kim Hummel hung up her field hockey stick and put on her running shoes to finish in 10th place in the event. The Albright Field Hockey team member crossed the finish line with a time of 6:10.70 to lead the even for the red and white.

Cook was also a top finisher in the Mile event for the Lions with a time of 4:57.37 to take 12th place. Right on his heels throughout the event was Kellert who finished with a time of 4:57.49 and Dalton with a time of 4:58.53.

Mallory Ketterer ended the 5,000 meter run in 8th place with a time of 22:55.00. In the field events, Lindsay Boyd closed out her first collegiate meet with a 26th place finish in the shot put. The freshman recorded a throw of 7.99 meters.

On the men's side of the shot put event, Jordan Gilbert led the afternoon with a fifth place finish and a throw of 12.70 meters. Dane Canonico also finished in the top-10 with a toss of 12.50 meters (8th place). Anthony Pellegrino recorded a throw of 11.87 meters (12th place) while Robert Baldwin recorded a throw of 11.33 meters (15th place).

Shannon Loos returned in the long jump with a distance of 4.47 meters to take 15th place, and Clark Runciman led the men's team in the long jump with a distance of 5.62 meters (19th place). Also recording solid finishes in the field events was Meghan Loos in the high jump (1.48 meters, 8th place), Runciman in the triple jump (11.97 meters, 10th place) and the pole vault (3.50 meters, 4th place).

The track and field teams will return to action on January 15th when they take part in the Kutztown University Invitational.
