ELIZABETHTOWN, PA - In their first conference meet of 2009 the Albright Men's Swim team took down the host Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College by the final score of 94-43 Saturday afternoon.
Led by a variety of swimmers the Lions took first place in eight of the 11 events they competed in. To start the meet off only Albright competed in the 200 yard medley relay, with the top team earning a final time of 1:48.19.
In the first individual event of the afternoon only Albright's John Ferrara (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) and Scott Mermelstein (Elkins Park, PA/Abington Senior) competed in the 1,000 yard freestyle, with Ferrara earning the top finish with a final time of 11:44.94. Mermelstein completed the long event three seconds behind his teammate earning a time of 11:47.87.
Elizabethtown made their first appearance in individual competition in the 200 yard freestyle. Sophomore Eric Kramer (Watsontown, PA/Warrior Run ) (1:50.82) went onto take first in the event, with the Blue Jays Chris Miller finishing in second place with a time of 1:52.91. E-town's Matt Drob posted his team's first top finish in the 50 yard freestyle earning a time of 23.55. Behind him was a trio of Albright swimmers led by Sean Zajdel (Yardley, PA/Pennsburg).
From there Albright took three straight events starting with Chris Sheerer (Leola, PA/Conestoga Valley) in the 400 yard IM. His first place finish was then followed up by Matt O'Neill (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) who recorded a time of 57.42 to take the 100 yard butterfly. Jack Kubacki (Reading, PA/Antietam) closed out the three first place finishes earning the top spot in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 51.43.
E-town's Miller earned his team's final individual first place finish in the 100 yard backstroke. Both Kramer and Sheerer continued their winning ways in the final two solo events of the afternoon, starting with Kramer's first place finish in the 500 yard freestyle followed by Sheerer's top finish in the 100 yard breaststroke.
In the final relay event of the day Albright selected to exhibition. With a final time of 1:35.34 Albright's 'A' team defeated their next closest competitor by nearly three seconds.
The Albright Men's Swim returns to action next Saturday when they travel to Susquehanna University for a non-conference meet which is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
