Women's Soccer Battles #23 Widener to Conference Draw

Box Score

CHESTER, Pa. – In what was their biggest challenge of 2010, the Lady Lions (5-3-3/0-0-1 Commonwealth) battled number 23 ranked Widener University (8-1-1/0-0-1 CC) to a 1-1 draw Friday evening at Leslie C. Quirk Stadium in the Commonwealth Conference opener for both teams.

Responsible for the Lions go-ahead goal was freshman Alissa Marcarelli.  The North Wales native came off the bench and drove a perfectly placed cross into the goal box.  Looking to get the ball out was the Widener defense.  However a lapse in judgement resulted in an own goal with about 15 minutes left in the match.

The huge goal truly changed the momentum of Friday's contest, which up to that point favored the home team heavily. Unfortunately a questionable call with less than 10 minutes to play, gave Widener a penalty kick opportunity. The Pride's Brittany Balentine evened the score and prevented one of the biggest upsets of the season.

In the overtime periods, Widener would tally four more shots with only two ending up on goal.

Despite leading the match in shots, the Pride was unable to capitalize on their opportunities do to the terrific play of junior goalkeeper #Olivia Giuliano#. The New Jersey native eight saves and the match, and faced a total of 16 shots from Widener.

The Lady Lions offense were held to just two shots in the contest, but played extremely hard against a tough conference opponent. Just one year ago the red and white knocked Widener out of playoff contention, when they tied them 0-0 in Reading. That draw earned Albright the number four-seed in last year's Commonwealth Conference tournament.

Women's Soccer returns to action on Monday when they travel to Valley Forge Christian College for a 4 p.m. non-conference match.
