Box Score
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With a Rachael Scheller 3-pointer and back-to-back made free throws by Julia Antonelli, the Warriors of Lycoming College (4-3/1-1 Commonwealth) managed to sneak past women's basketball (2-4/0-2 Commonwealth) and take a 63-62 overtime conference win Saturday afternoon in Lamade Gymnasium.
Knotting the score at 54-54 with less than a minute to play in regulation was Kaitlyn Ober. On Albright's next possession saw senior
Jessica McGinness try for the game-winning jumper, but unfortunately it fell just short. Following the Lycoming rebound, the Warriors turned the ball over, giving the red and white a second chance for the win. This time it was
Rory Yerkes who tried her luck at the game-winner, but unfortunately it did not make it through.
In the overtime freshman
Meghan Boyle put the Lions up by two following the first overtime jumper of her collegiate career. Lycoming quickly evened the score again, but with back-to-back free throws by Boyle, Albright was once again in control. The Lions then made it a four point game following a McGinness jumper which was the result of Lycoming turnover. Forcing the key change in possession was
Rose Williamson who also assisted McGinness' jumper.
From there the two teams would exchange free throws, but it was the Scheller's 3-pointer with a minute to play that changed the outcome of Saturday's match-up. Following the basket McGinness tried to score a deep three of her own, but was unable to convert. The Warriors managed to pick-up the rebound and after a 30 second timeout got the ball to Antonelli, just as she was fouled by the Lions.
Antonelli who entered the contest shooting 70% from the line made both free throws to put Lycoming up by one. On Albright's last possession, Yerkes once again tried to give her team the win from behind the arc. Unfortunately her last second heroics fell just short yet again.
As a team, Albright shot 34% (23-68) from the field, while Lycoming shot 37% (23-62). McGinness led the red and white with 24 points on 9-of-20 shooting from the floor, which included one 3-pointer, and 5-of-7 shooting from the charity stripe.
Rose Williamson pulled down a team-high 10 boards, while Boyle posted nine rebounds and 15 points. The 6'0” freshman also had three blocks and added two assists in 43 minutes of playing time.
Lycoming had four players finish in double-figures, with Scheller recording the game's only double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Ober led the offense with 16 points, but managed seven of the team's 30 turnovers.
Women's Basketball returns to action next Wednesday when they host Dickinson College at 6 p.m. in the Bollman Center.
