Box Score
READING, Pa. - Tied at 7-7 going into the top of the 10th inning, Misericordia University's (17-14) single season home run leader Nate Newman went deep for the 11th time this season with a two-run shot to give the Cougars the 9-7 non-conference win over the host Lions Thursday afternoon on Kelchner Field.
Newman's homer was the second of two in Thursday's contest, as Albright's
Casey Lawrence also went deep for the first time this season. Lawrence's shot actually put Albright ahead 3-1 in the bottom half of the third inning.
On the afternoon the McSherrystown native was 2-for-5 with five RBI and a run scored. His second hit against the Cougars was a double in the very next inning which drove in a pair of runs to put Albright up 5-4. The Lions would put up another run in that inning to take a 6-4 lead over Misericordia.
From there, the Cougars would slowly claw their way back into the contest scoring a run in the fifth, eighth and ninth innings to take a 7-6 lead.
Down but definitely not out the Lions grabbed their bats for what needed to be another huge inning for the red and white. After retiring the first batter in the inning, pinch hitter
Shane Stein was walked.
After a fly-out to right field,
Justin Danser stepped up to the plate. No stranger to clutch hits, Danser absolutely crushed the ball to deep centerfield giving the Stein the window he needed to score the then game-tying run.
Having to cover 180 feet, Stein took off the second Danser made contact. The speedy outfielder would round third just as the Cougars cut-off man turned to throw the ball home, but it did not matter as Stein beat out the throw to even the game at 7-7.
Danser's huge hit in the ninth was his third of the day as the junior infielder went 3-for-4 overall, with two RBI.
The whole time Misericordia was focusing on getting Stein, Danser moved himself over to third base. After intentionally walking Tommy Canuso, to put a runner on first and third, the Cougars got out of the inning on fly ball to right field.
Now in extra innings, the Lions quickly got two outs on the scoreboard with only a runner on first base. After the Newman homer, the Lions would get the final out of the inning.
Unfortunately, Misericordia would use the momentum from the game-winning homer to retire all the Lions batters in order to take the victory.
Picking up the win, his third of the year was Andrew Yasinski, who went nine complete innings Thursday afternoon. During his outing, Yasinski gave-up nine hits, while walking six, and striking out eight. Earning the save was Pete Doggett who closed out the tenth inning.
Thursday's loss went to
Tyler Meckley who is now 1-2 on the season after giving up the homer in the top of the 10th.
Matt Rehrig started on the mound for the Lions and went five complete before handing the ball over to Kevin O'Neill who went the next four innings.
Baseball returns to action on Sunday when they host Franklin and Marshall College at 1 p.m. on Kelchner Field.
