A 40-foot eagle putt on the back nine ultimately proved the difference as the Albright College men's golf team was edged by a single stroke by local rival Alvernia for the Commonwealth Conference championship on Sunday.
Freshman
Avery Jones shot the two best rounds of the tournament and easily won individual honors with a 73-73-146. That earned him the Most Outstanding Golfer and Rookie of the Year awards.
The two Reading squads were neck-and-neck the entire time and were actually tied after day one. The difference may have come on the par-5 14th hole of the final round, as Alvernia's
Justin Arnt drained a long eagle putt.
Alvernia finished at 309-315-624, while Albright came in at 309-316-625. That was still 35 strokes better than third-place Messiah, with a distant 660.
The entire Crusader squad was within two strokes of each other, and all five earned All-Conference honors. Head coach
Jon King took home Coach of the Year recognition.
Albright's
Anthony Rusnak was first team All-Commonwealth and placed second overall despite a second-day round of 80.
Sal Capelli (79-83-162) and
Erik Thorn (82-80-162) each tied for ninth overall and were named to the second-team All-Conference list.
