READING, Pa. – The Albright field hockey team used a late goal by
Amanda Long to send its match with Muhlenberg in the ECAC quarterfinals into overtime Wednesday night at Alvernia, but Muhlenberg got the game-winner less than one minute into overtime to notch a 2-1 victory.
Aileen Taylor made 11 saves for the Lions.
Muhlenberg controlled much of the action, but the Albright back line assisted Taylor in keeping Muhlenberg off the board through the first 57-plus minutes of play. Muhlenberg outshot the Lions, 20-1, on the night while holding an 11-0 advantage in penalty corners. Despite those advantages, Taylor held Muhlenberg scoreless for most of regulation.
Muhlenberg took the lead in the 58
th minute when Rachel Strow sent a pass in front that Taylor Smith used to beat Taylor for a 1-0 advantage. It looked like that lead would hold, but Albright made the most of its one shot on goal when Long scored on a penalty stroke with just 2:12 remaining in regulation. The goal is Long's 15
th on the season.
That sent the match into overtime, but Muhlenberg got the winner on an Albright own goal.
Muhlenberg continues into the semifinals of the tournament this weekend. Albright concludes its season with an 11-7 record.
