Lions Win Third Straight

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Albright knocked off Swarthmore 2-1 in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.  The win puts the Lions at 5-1 on the season, while the Garnet fall to 4-4.

Albright scored twice in a span of a minute and 46 seconds midway through the first half.  Junior Amanda Long picked up the first goal of the day 12:32 into the game, beating the Swarthmore goaltender off a rebound to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. The goal is Long's team-leading seventh of the season.  Junior Tracy Snyder pushed the Albright lead to 2-0 at the 14:18 mark, scoring her fourth goal of the year from the right side of the goal line.

Swarthmore got on the scoreboard midway through the second half.  The Garnet were awarded a penalty stroke in the 48th minute, and Ursula Monaghan scored on the stroke to pull Swarthmore within a goal at 2-1.

Albright responded to the Garnet goal with some scoring chances of its own, but the Lions were not able to regain a two-goal advantage.  Swarthmore put together a late offensive push in the final five minutes, earning two penalty corners and getting off a pair of shots, but sophomore goaltender Aileen Taylor and the Albright defense were up to the task as the Lions hung on for the 2-1 win.

Taylor finished the game with six saves for Albright.  The Lions outshot Swarthmore 22-10 in the contest while collecting 13 penalty corners to five for the Garnet.

Albright will open Commonwealth Conference play on Saturday, when the Lions travel to Annville to take on Lebanon Valley College.  Game time is scheduled for 1:00.
