Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to McDaniel in ECAC Championship

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Kirsten Gibson's goal with 5:43 left in regulation proved to be the difference in the game as the Albright Lions women's soccer team (14-5-2) dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to McDaniel (14-5-1) in the ECAC Championship on Sunday afternoon at McDaniel.

Gibson collected her own rebound off an initial shot that was saved by Lions' goal keeper Alexis Tunney and put the shot in the open net to give McDaniel a 3-2 lead.

Albright concludes the season with a program-record 14 wins and advanced to the ECAC finals for the first time in program history.

Gibson opened the scoring for the Green Terror in the 27th minute as she played a through ball from Hannah Scheppers and buried a shot from 20 yards out. The Lions would respond less than three minutes later as senior Erica Bross put home a header off a free kick from freshman Diza Hasanaj to tie the game at one apiece. The goal was Bross' third of the season.

Senior Emily Mollica gave Albright a lead in the 59th minute with a free kick from 40 yards out to make it a 2-1 game in favor of the visitors. Similar to the first half, the answer came quickly as McDaniel tied things at two just 2:43 later as Maddie Schwartz converted a header off a corner from Alyssa Johnston to set the stage for Gibson's game-winner.

McDaniel held an 18-6 shot advantage in the contest and a 10-2 edge in shots on target. Senior Kennedy Lutz recorded three shots to pace the Lions, while Gibson's five shots topped the Green Terror.

Tunney made seven saves for Albright.
