Field Hockey Suffers 3-1 Setback to York

READING, Pa. – The Albright field hockey team suffered a 3-1 setback to York in MAC Commonwealth action at Shirk Stadium Saturday evening.

With the loss the Lions fall to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Meanwhile, the Spartans advance to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in MAC Commonwealth play.

The first quarter of the game was a battle of defenses with only one shot taken from both sides. First-year Lamya Mejias fired off the first shot of the game in the fifth minute of action that was stopped by Spartan goalkeeper Kaitlyn Wallace. York finally broke through at the 11:27-mark of the first quarter as they lifted the ball into the back of the net off a penalty corner. Junior goalkeeper Adele Thomas stood tall and completed three crucial saves in the second stanza to keep the Lions within one. York held onto the lead entering the half.

York came out of the half firing on all cylinders, taking the two-goal lead just over two minutes into the third quarter as they scored off a rebounded shot initially saved by Thomas. First-year Olivia Lorah had a decent look off of a penalty corner in the 42nd minute, but Wallace kept the Lions scoreless as they entered the fourth quarter with a 2-0 lead. York added to their lead at the 48:41-minute mark, scoring off a loose ball in front of the Lions goal. Mejias finally got Albright on the board in the 58th minute after being awarded a penalty stroke. The Lions were unable to recover from the deficit, however, as the Spartans claimed the 3-1 victory.

York held a sizable 15-4 shot advantage and 10-3 shot on goal advantage over Albright. The Spartans also earned 13 penalty corners compared to the Lions three. Thomas receives the loss for Albright despite completing seven saves in 60 minutes of play. Wallace earns the win for York with two saves in 60 minutes of play.

Albright will continue conference play as they travel to Eastern Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
