MADISON, N.J. – The Albright women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome FDU-Florham, despite a strong second half, as they were defeated 16-14 Saturday afternoon in MAC crossover play.
With the loss the Lions close out the regular season 7-6 overall and 4-4 in MAC Commonwealth play. The Devils advance to 13-0 overall and 8-0 in MAC Freedom play.
The Devils had the opening goal of the game to give them an early 1-0 lead. The Lions responded with a three-goal run sparked by first-year
Kyra Lycett. Sophomore
Chloe Fornoff followed with a goal at the 25:00-mark to give the Lions their first lead of the game. Junior
Lauren China capped off the run with an unassisted goal that marked her 100
th career-point. FDU didn't hang their heads as they went on a three-goal run of their own to claim the 4-3 lead at the 17:03-mark of the first half. Fornoff tied the game up at 4 with a goal at the 15:36-mark. FDU scored on back-to-back goals to claim the lead again at 6-4 with 13:40 left in the half. Fornoff registered her third goal of the game at the 12:49-mark to bring the score to 6-5. The Devils capped off the half with five unanswered goals to give them an 11-5 lead heading into the second half.
Fornoff scored the opening goal of the second half to cut the Lions' deficit to 11-6 at the 26:35-mark. FDU capitalized on a man-up opportunity at the 25:56-mark following an Albright yellow card. Junior
Abbie Moist added back-to-back goals for the Lions, both with the assist from China, to make it 12-8 with 20:12 left in the game. First-year
Brianna Kung kept the Lions rolling with a goal at the 19:15-mark, cutting their deficit to 12-9. China and Lycett continued the run with back-to-back goals to bring them to just a one-goal deficit. FDU finally snapped the run with a free position goal at the 14:20-mark to bring their lead to 13-11. China responded with a free position goal of her own to get them within one goal again. The Devils added back-to-back goals to bring their lead to 15-12 with 10:50 left to play. Junior
Ashleigh Tortorice scored off a feed from Moist to get the Lions within two again. FDU added another goal, to which Moist responded to with her third goal of the game at the 5:27-mark. Unfortunately, this was the final goal of the game and the Lions attempt to chip away at their deficit was unsuccessful as the Devils claimed the 16-14 win.
FDU held a slight 35-27 shot advantage over Albright and won the battle for ground balls 16-6. The Devils also won draw controls 17-14 and had ten caused turnovers on the afternoon. Senior goalkeeper
Terae Mason receives the loss for the Lions despite making 13 saves in 60 minutes of play. Sophomore goalkeeper Maddy Apap receives the win for FDU making five saves in 60 minutes of play. China registered her 100
th career point and added three goals and two assists for five points, two caused turnovers, one ground ball, and one draw control on the afternoon. Fornoff tallied a career-high four goals and added five draw controls for the Lions. Moist registered three goals and one assist for four points. Lycett contributed two goals and four draw controls while Kung and Tortorice each added one goal.
The Lions will hit the road to face Widener in the first round of MAC Commonwealth playoffs Tuesday at 6pm.
