ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Women's tennis was in action this afternoon participating in their first ever NCAA Tournament in program history. The Lions historic season came to an unfortunate end on Friday afternoon dropping the first-round match to University of Texas at Dallas 5-0. The Lions end the season with a program record 18 wins.
Today's match was forced indoors due to rain falling throughout the day on Friday. The first round matchup between the Lions and Comets was played at Brigade Sports Complex on the campus of NAVY University at 3:00 p.m. The match was originally set for a 12:00 p.m. start on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.
Despite today's loss, the Lions have so much to be proud of this season. The team became the first in school history to go 6-0 in MAC Commonwealth regular season play, first to host the MAC Commonwealth Tournament, first to win the MAC Commonwealth title and subsequently qualify for the NCAA Tournament and the first to record 18 wins in a single season.
Yesterday, the MAC released the women's tennis all-conference teams and major award winners and the Lions were well represented on the list.
Alex Pancu was named MAC Commonwealth Player of the Year for the third consecutive season while also being named to the First Team. Head coach
Miranda Brown was named MAC Commonwealth Coach of the Year.
Michelle Timothy and
Valeria Sanchez were named to the Second Team,
Elicia Aponte and

Coming into play today, Albright was on an 11-match win streak last losing a match nearly two months ago on March 20. In conference play this season, Albright beat Messiah, Alvernia and York College for the first time in over 14 years propelling them onto their MAC championship run. Albright figures to be major players for years to come in the conference and nationally only graduating two seniors this season.
Doubles matches were played first this afternoon and finished in the order of #3, #2 and #1 doubles.
Alex Pancu and
Valeria Sanchez teamed up in #1 doubles and battled tough throughout the match. The Lion duo got down early but battled back to make it 6-3 in favor of Texas-Dallas. In the end the Comets wound up on top winning 8-3.
