On Thursday afternoon, the Albright athletic department has announced Daryl Nelson as the new cross country and track and field head coach. Nelson joins the Lions with multiple years of experience coaching at the collegiate and high school levels.
Co athletic director Rick Ferry is excited to have Nelson on staff. “Daryl Nelson quickly rose to the top of our search to lead two athletic programs at Albright. Nelson has immense knowledge of the two sports and I can not wait to see the success Nelson will ultimately bring to Albright.”
Coach Nelson brings with him over 20 years of coaching experience. Nelson got his start in coaching at Saint John Neumann and Saint Maria Goretti High School for three years before moving on to La Salle University. After a couple years at La Salle, Nelson was named the head coach of the track and field program at Boys Latin High School in Philadelphia, Pa. For five years from 2016-2021, Nelson served as the head cross country and track and field coach at University of Sciences.
For 22 years, Nelson served as the acting district manager, recreation leader and the track and field chair with the city of Philadelphia Parks and Recreation program. The Parks and Recreation programs hosts and organizes sports leagues & athletics activities in 16 different types of sports in a variety of programs to engage all age level youth, including teens.
Outside of coaching cross country and track and field, Nelson has worked in education for over 30 years. Nelson has spent time teaching at Cornerstone Christian Academy, Raising Horizon Quest Charter School (Philadelphia, PA), Career Academic Development Institute (OIC of America Literacy Program), Communities In Schools Education Center (Philadelphia, PA), and Mastery Charter High School (Philadelphia, PA).
Nelson most recently spent time as the assistant principal at Bishop McDevitt as well as middle school science teacher at Penn Wood Middle School.
Nelson graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor of Science in Sport’s Management and would later go on to earn a degree in Masters of Education in Multicultural Education from Eastern University and receiving Masters of Education in Multicultural Education Post Baccalaureate also from Eastern University.
The well educated and well-rounded Nelson will begin working immediately with the Albright cross country and track and field programs as the head coach of both.
