Derek Stump has been named men’s lacrosse head coach as announced by the Albright athletics department on Friday afternoon. Stump played on the Albright men’s lacrosse team from 2014-2017 and is a graduate of Albright College.

Coach Stump returns to Albright after seven total seasons coaching the Exeter high school men’s lacrosse team as an assistant coach for five seasons and a head coach for two seasons. In all, Stump has been coaching the game of lacrosse since 2013, bringing with him 12 years of coaching experience.

“I am thrilled to return to my alma mater as the men’s lacrosse head coach. I would like to thank the Albright athletics staff and Athletic Director Rick Ferry for believing in me to lead the program. As an alumnus, I am thrilled to be here and cannot wait to get started.” Said newly minted head coach Stump.

Stump played 69 total games for the Lions spanning 2014-2017, finishing his impressive playing career with 157 points on 119 assists and 38 goals. The 157 total points ranks 5th all-time in program history while the assist total is 2nd all-time. Stump was a part of some of the winningest teams in program history having won 13 games in back-to-back seasons as well as an ECAC Mid-Atlantic Championship in 2014.

“Having known Derek Stump from his playing days, I am pleased to be welcoming him back to Albright to lead the men’s lacrosse program,” said athletic director Rick Ferry. “I have the utmost confidence in coach Stump and am excited to see his hardworking mentality and coaching prowess on display this spring.”

Since 2013, Stump has been a coach with the Black Widow Select boys’ lacrosse club team. With Black Widow, Stump guided over 60 student-athletes to achieve their goal of playing collegiate lacrosse.

In the spring of 2018, coach Stump was named the assistant coach and offensive coordinator at nearby Exeter high school. Stump excelled in the role as offensive coordinator increasing the teams’ goal per game output in each season in the role.

Four years later in the fall of 2022, Stump was named head coach of the Exeter boys lacrosse program. In 2023 coach Stump was named Coach of the Year for leading Exeter to a 12-7 record including leading five players to receive all-conference honors as well as the overall player of the year.

While coaching at Exeter, Stump founded the Excelerate Lacrosse Club. The club was created to help players further develop their offensive skills through personalized one-on-one and small group sessions.

Stump graduated from Albright College in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
