READING, Pa. – After the extremely tough loss on Saturday, Albright men's basketball (12-5/4-2 Commonwealth) got right back on the winning track as they defeated Commonwealth Conference opponent Arcadia University (4-10/0-6 Commonwealth) by the final score of 72-59 Wednesday evening in the Bollman Center.
Senior guard
Matt Ashcroft fueled the Lions victory with his game-high 19 points. Ashcroft was 7-for-8 from the field, 4-for-5 from 3-point range, and 1-for-2 from the line.
Derek Hall, who was named to the D3Hoops.com Team of the Week this afternoon, recorded his second consecutive double-double. The 6'11” center totaled 14 points and 10 rebounds on the night.
Shane Irwin and
Cornell Mickens each totaled 11 points to help the Lions cause.
Defensively, the Lions were solid throughout as they did not allow an Arcadia player to reach double-figures. From the field Albright limited the Knights to just 35.8% shooting, while they managed to shot over 56%.
Just like their female counterparts, the men's team also used their inside game to completely dominate their conference opponents. Of the 72 points scored in Wednesday's win, 42 of them were scored in the paint.
The first half was a tough one for the Lions, who despite shooting over 48% were unable to pull away from the Knights. With Ashcroft scoring 16 of his 19 points in the first 20 minutes, the Lions were able to keep a safe distance from Arcadia.
With an 11 point lead and a fire in their eyes, the Lions quickly took control of the second half. Before Arcadia even knew what hit them, the Lions jumped out to a 20 point lead with about 14 minutes to play. Every single time the Knights tried to build some steam, Albright fired right back.
Playing a major part in the Lions second half flurry was Mickens who put up a second half high eight points to lead all scorers. Albright ended the half shooting over 68% as a team, while holding Arcadia to just 39%.
Men's Basketball returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Annville to take on Lebanon Valley College at 3 p.m. in a conference match-up.
