Football Travels to FDU for Friday Night Showdown

ALBRIGHT COLLEGE LIONS (4-3/2-3 MAC) AT FDU-FLORHAM DEVILS (0-6/0-4 MAC)

After suffering a third straight loss the Lions will look to get back on track this week as they face the Devils of Farleigh Dickinson University- College at Florham. Albright has dropped its last three games, all to MAC opponents, after starting the season 4-0. Difficulties with the passing game have haunted the Lions this October and facing an opponent who has surrendered an average of almost 500 yards of offense per game will be the perfect opportunity to channel the offensive performances from their first four games this season.

WHERE: Madison, NJ
WHEN: Saturday, October 21
KICKOFF: 6:30pm

GAMETIME FORECAST:

Partly cloudy during the day with highs in the upper 50s. Temperatures will dip after dark with lows in the mid/low 40s.

LIONS LAST WEEK:

After two tough losses to two MAC opponents, the Lions' schedule continued to prove difficult. The #10 Delaware Valley Aggies left Shirk Stadium with their undefeated record and hope for a perfect season still intact after defeating Albright 20-10. For the third week in a row, the Lions offense failed to produce the way it had through the first four games of the season.  Posting just 82 yards on the ground and 176 through the air, the Lions failed to score in the red zone twice. Down 13-0 at half the Lions responded with a strong third quarter and scored ten points to make it a three point game, but a fourth quarter 14-yard touchdown run for Delaware Valley with 11 minutes left was enough to hold Albright off.

ALBRIGHT OFFENSE:

The Lions' offensive identity continues to be as foggy as that of a CIA agent. Through the first four weeks of the season the Lions averaged 338 yards through the air and 163 yards on the ground per game. Since then those numbers have dropped and flip-flopped- 134 yards rushing and 131 yards passing through the last three games. While the rushing totals have been sufficient, the passing game has been off key for the past three weeks which has had a significant impact on Albright's ability to put up points. Quarterbacks Adam Galczynski and TJ Luddy continue to operate in somewhat of a platoon system as head coach John Marzka gives the most drives to the quarterback who is most effective from week to week. Last week it was Luddy who attempted a season high 27 passes for 153 yards, but was unable to reach the end zone.

LIONS' DEFENSE:

The Lions' defensive unit fared well against the #10 Aggies last week, continuing to disrupt plays in the backfield and limiting them to just 20 points. The defense can be broken down into two distinct groups right now and they are the front seven, and the secondary. The Lions' front seven has put together a successful string of games. Linebacker Ryan Ott was the Lions' most valuable player last week. He leads the team with 49 tackles, including six for a loss. The defense has struggled to defend the pass despite the efforts of sophomore safety Drew Peterson and cornerbacks Mark Bergery and David Webb. The defensive line for the Lions has applied pressure to opposing quarterbacks consistently all year long and has had at least two sacks in each of the last three games. The secondary will have to match that consistency this week.

SERIES HISTORY:

Albright leads the series 14-6 since its first meeting with FDU-Florham in 1979.

2010 ALB 41-15
2009 ALB 49-28
2008 ALB 24-17
2007 ALB 17-14
2006 FDU 35-39
2005 FDU14-17
2004 FDU 35-21
2003 ALB 17-10

FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON OFFENSE:

Running backs Mike Larson and Sean Norton combine to average 70.5 yards per game on the ground. Senior quarterback Ryan Cushman has passed for five touchdowns and five interceptions while also averaging 34.7 yards rushing. FDU's number-one pass catcher is Anthony Fruncillo, who's caught 18 passes for 221 yards and two scores. Florham has 265 yards of offense per game but with ten total turnovers the Devils average only 11.0 points.

FDU-D:

FDU-Florham uses a 3-4 style defense led by senior linebacker Steve Hoverson, who leads the team with seven and a half tackles for a loss, five sacks and two fumbles forced. The remainder of Florham's defense has struggled and has given up 96 points in the first quarter this year. They've only picked off a pass once but seven different players have recovered fumbles and four have forced at least two. The hard-hitting defense will need to stop Josan Holmes and Zach Groff in order to keep its team in the game.
