Lions Shoot the Lights Out in Second Half, Pull Away From Berks

Box Score

The Albright College men's basketball team shot 76% from the floor in the second half as the Lions won 78-61, Sunday at Penn State-Berks.

The winless PSU-Berks Lions were down just two points at halftime, but Albright put the game away after the break, making 18-of-22 two point shots in the second half.

Defensively, the Lions held the host Nittany Lions to just 33.3% shooting in the second half. Albright was also efficient from the free throw line, making 13 of 14 attempts (92.9%).

Senior Derek Hall had team-highs for points (15), rebounds (seven) and assists (four). Cornell Mickens (12 points) was in double-figures, along with Shane Irwin and Devin Brown (10 points each). Sophomore Kyle Jordan blocked five shots.

Albright actually trailed its cross-town rival 36-33 two minutes into the second half, after a basket from PSU-Berks' Jeff Schmidt. Sam Marrella scored with 15:21 remaining to snap a 4:21 scoreless streak for Albright, and Reuel Moore followed with a jumper to re-take the lead.

Tore Turner hit four free throws and Schmidt added one to keep it close, but the Nittany Lions went 6:45 without a field goal following Schmidt's hoop.

Irwin's jumper made it 42-38 Albright, and Brown's lay-up midway through the half pushed the lead to 50-43. The Lions led by double-digits for the first time after a three-point play by Hall with 7:49 remaining.

Neither side led by more than five in a tight first half. Zach Benjamin answered Schmidt's dunk with a jumper to tie the game at 29-29 with just under four minutes remaining in the period. Both teams combined to miss every field goal attempt the rest of the way, but Albright taking a slim 31-29 halftime lead after two free throws by Moore.

Dontez Reid had a game-high 18 points for Berks, with backcourt teammate Turner turning in 15 points and seven boards.

Albright improves to 6-2 and will host Berkeley on January 29 on the first day of its Holiday Tournament. PSU-Berks falls to 0-8.
