Football Shuts Out Misericordia on Senior Day

Box Score

Several seniors, playing in their final home game, led the Albright College football team to victory over the winless Cougars of Misericordia 48-0 in dominating fashion.

Senior quarterback Adam Galczynski completed 15 of 21 passes, throwing touchdowns to seniors Scott Pillar and Caleb Shilko, as the Lions cruised to victory.

It was a strong day for offense as they compiled 380 yards, scoring six touchdowns.

Shilko scored on an eight-yard pass from Galczynski with six and a half minutes left in the first quarter to give the Lions the lead.

Three minutes later Pillar caught a 13-yard pass for a touchdown, putting Albright up 14-0. The Lions appeared to have scored earlier on a rush by Senior Ty Hughes, but it was called back on a holding penalty. All of this came after cornerback Chris Stephens blocked a punt, knocking down the punter and giving the Lions the ball at Misericordia 11-yard line.

In the second, a 19-yard pass to Pillar that went through the hands of teammate Eric Wade and a 27-yard rush from Hughes put the Lions in scoring position once again. Pillar almost scored his second touchdown of the game, but came up just short of the goal line, leading to a three-yard run for a touchdown by Marty Reinhardt.

The Lions scored twice in the third. After forcing a three-and-out, they added to their lead on a 47-yard punt return from Drew Peterson, his longest return of the season and the Lions' first touchdown return in 2012.

Hughes capped off a five-play, 55-yard drive with a two-yard run to put the home team up 36. 50 of the yards came on four rushes from Hughes. He finish with 127 yards on 12 rushes. The other five came on a nice grab from Pillar in front of the goal line.

Senior Zach Groff scored the final two Albright touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The first came off a one-yard run on 4th and goal. He scored later with just over two minutes left in the game, scoring from seven yards out. The offense started with the ball on the Misericordia 24-yard line after Stephens blocked his second punt of the day.

The Albright defense dominated, holding the Cougars to just 38 yards of total offense. Misericordia managed only 27 yards through the air, all coming in the first half. The Cougars failed to convert on third down 14 times in 15 attempts, and once on fourth down.

The Lions held Misericordia to just two first downs, one the result of an Albright penalty. This was an issue for the Lions, getting flagged seven times for 76 yards.

Seniors Tim McCaffrey and Ryan Ott recorded six and seven tackles, respectively. McCaffrey just missed an interception, forcing a punt. Ott harassed Misericordia quarterback Michael Pheasant all afternoon, sacking him once. Nick Gjoni and Mark Capetola had six and five tackles, both with four for loss.

The win ties for Albright's second largest shutout in school history behind a 63-0 victory over Delaware Valley in 1963, the other being a 48-0 win against Palmyra AC.

On the bright side for Misericordia, their defense managed to get to the Albright quarterback often, recording four sacks on the day.

Albright College is now 6-3, 5-3 in the MAC. Misericordia falls to 0-9, 0-8 in conference play. The Lions finish the season next Saturday at Lebanon Valley, game time 1 p.m.
