Football Falls Two Yards Short in 24-18 Loss to Stevenson

Box Score

A final pass from the two yard line sailed just over Daniel McNair's head as the Albright College football team fell 24-18 to Stevenson University on Saturday in Owings Mills, Md.

Sophomore Daniel Sobolewski kicked a school record 51-yard field goal in the defeat. Senior Ty Hughes rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown, while classmate McNair had 85 receiving yards and a score.

Albright QB TJ Luddy found Griffin Eldridge to the 41-yard line with 1:23 remaining and the Lions trying to drive for the winning score. He then hit Devron Clark across midfield, and rushed to the Stevenson 24 with 30 seconds remaining.

Luddy found McNair at the two yard line with four seconds remaining, setting up one final play with the game on the line. McNair broke to the right side of the end zone, but the pass went over his fingertips as time expired.

There was very little action in the earlier parts of the second half, as the Lions came up empty on their first five drives after the break. On Albright's second possession of the second half, Luddy was intercepted by Shane Clough deep in Stevenson territory.

A block in the back started Albright's opening fourth quarter drive inside the 20, and the Lions went three-and-out. The Mustangs continued to run down the clock, and there was just 8:12 remaining when the Red and White offense came back on the field.

Two straight completions to freshman Vinny Williams totaled 39 yards, but Luddy slipped in the pocket on third down as another drive fell short.

With 5:52 remaining, senior Mark Capetola got a hold of John Gasparovic in the end zone. The Stevenson QB threw it away and a safety was called on the intentional grounding. The Lions took over at their own 30 after the free kick, trailing 24-12.

Luddy found McNair for 25 yards and then Clark for an 18-yard pickup. Eldridge caught a ball at the five, and McNair finished off the drive with a touchdown that cut the deficit to 24-18.

The Lions forced three turnovers in the first quarter but still trailed 24-10 at the break.

Stevenson seized the lead on the opening drive, as Jeromie Miller took a hitch-and-go 57 yards deep into Lion territory to the 10-yard line. After a holding penalty, Chris Cooper made a great grab on a fade to open the scoring.

Levi Myers' interception on Stevenson's second drive set up Albright in good field position. Clark dropped a 38-yard pass in the end zone, but Sobolewski hit from 51 yards to get Albright on the board.

Chris Stephens picked off another pass in Mustang territory, but Luddy threw a pick on the very next play. A Stevenson field goal made it 10-3 in favor of the hosts.

After a fumble forced by Joe Magosin and recovered by Matthew Hnatiuk, the Lions drove down to the one-yard line. Luddy tried to cross the plane on a sneak, but no whistle was blown and the ball was eventually ripped from his hands. Austin Tennessee took it 100 yards the other way, and the touchdown was upheld over head coach John Marzka's protests. The 14-point swing left the Lions, who were inches away from tying the game, in a 17-3 hole.

Hughes pounded it in from two yards late in the first half for an Albright TD, but Mustangs marched right down the field and scored with 36 seconds remaining for a two-touchdown advantage.

Albright falls to 1-1 and faces a massive test next weekend, at home against Delaware Valley College in the Pretzel Bowl.
