Biancamano Scores Game-Winner for Women's Soccer

READING, Pa. -- Lyra Biancamano picked an opportune time to score her first career goal in an Albright women's soccer uniform.

The freshman scored with 1:05 remaining in regulation time lifting the Lions to a 2-1 Commonwealth Conference victory over visiting Alvernia on Thursday in Shirk Stadium.

With both teams pressing to score a game-winning goal late in regulation, Albright took advantage of a pair of plays. Emily Sousa started the play by dribbling the ball down the right side and them made a cross to the middle which bounced off a defender to a waiting Biancamano who beat Jessica Plunkett in the left corner to give the Lions the win.

"At this time of year you just want to get wins," said Albright head coach Pat Stanco. " We have things that we need to clean up, but I'm happy with the result."

The victory by the Lions moves Albright to 3-1 in Commonwealth Conference play just one game behind both Messiah and Stevenson for the top spot in the league standings. Albright has four matches remaining on the schedule and the top five teams make the conference tournament.

The Lions controlled much of the play and held a 1-0 lead at the intermission after Diaz scored at the 11:52 mark of the first half. On a Lions corner kick, Morgan Valera played the ball to Sousa who found Diaz who beat Margaret Burnett for the goal.

Albright outshot the visiting Crusaders 6-1 in the first half and held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Alvernia, which dropped to 5-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play, got the equalizer when Taylor Landis headed in a ball following a shot that struck the post. The tying goal came at the 74:09 mark of the match.

Jaymee Stepp notched the victory in goal for Albright and improved to 6-3-1 on the season.

Albright returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 18) when it visits league powerhouse Messiah for a 3 p.m. match.
