COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Sophomore
Josh Marquez scored 19 points and the Albright men's basketball team cruised to its first victory of the season with an 86-52 victory over Ursinus in the Middle Atlantic Conference-Centennial Challenge on Sunday in Helfferich Hall.
Marquez finished the game 7-of-12 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line to lead the Lions. He also added six rebounds and a steal.
Albright, which improved to 1-1 overall, also received 12 points from
Omari Ringgold and 10 points each from
Evan Ward and
Jalen Harris.
The Lions shot 50.8 percent from the floor for the game, including a sizzling 55.6 percent in the second half.
Ursinus (0-2) was paced by Matt Knowles who scored a team-high 13 points.
Albright took control of the game midway through the first half by holding the Bears scoreless for nearly 10 minutes. Leading 17-16 with 12:13 to play in the first half, Albright went on an 11-0 run that stretched the lead to 28-16 with 2:15 to play in the opening stanza.
After the Bears cut the lead to 30-21, Harris scored five straight points to give the Lions a 35-21 lead at the intermission.
Ursinus opened the second half on a 12-0 run to climb to within 35-33 with 17:19 to play in the second half.
A dunk byÂ
Evan Dunn sparked a 6-0 run that extended the Albright lead to 46-37 with 14:36 to play.
Gilberto Benz drilled a three-pointer which kick started a 12-1 Albright run that pushed the Lion lead to 60-42 with 9:18 left in the game.
Albright slowly extended the lead from that point and Ursinus never got closer than 17 points for the remainder of the game.
Albright will open the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday (Nov. 19) at 7 p.m. when it hosts Penn State-Berks.
