Ringgold Career High Not Enough to Lead Lions Past Hood

FREDERICK, Md. -- Sophomore Omari Ringgold scored a career-high 25 points, but Chris Cook scored 24 points and Hood withstood a furious second-half rally by Albright to defeat the Lions 80-72 in a Commonwealth Conference game on Saturday at BB&T Arena.

Albright, which dropped to 6-9 overall and 2-5 in conference play, trailed by 20 points in the first period but rallied to regain the lead late in the second half.

The Lions took a 68-66 lead when Ringgold converted two free throws with 3:17 to play.

Corey Martin put the Blazers back in front with a three-pointer, but Vince Lombardi converted a layup giving Albright a 70-69 lead with 2:31 to play in the second period.

Reggie Daniels answered with a three-pointer with 2:09 remaining, which put Hood in front to stay.

Two free throws each by Cook and Daniels pushed the lead to 76-70 with 1:09 remaining before Evan Ward hit a pair of free throws with 52 seconds to play that brought Albright to within 76-72.

Albright had several chances to cut into the lead, but missed its last four shots and both of its free throw attempts during the final minute of play.

Albright outrebounded Hood 45-33 and outscored the Blazers 27-18 at the foul line, but the Lions shot just 35.0 percent from the floor for the game while the Blazers made 47.5 percent of their field goal attempts.

Hood, which improved to 8-8 overall and 4-3 in league play, also received 12 points from James Brown and 11 points from Daniels.

Ringgold finished the contest 8-of-17 from the floor and 8-of-8 from the line to lead the Lions. DeJuan Smith added 16 points and Ward finished with 11 points and seven rebounds for Albright.

Five straight points, including a three-pointer, by Cook gave Hood a 33-13 lead with 6:02 to play in the first half. The Blazers duplicated that lead on two other occasions before Albright began its comeback.

Ringgold scored eight points during a 10-2 Albright run to close the first half that brought the Lions to within 39-27 at the break.

Back-to-back baskets by Ringgold and Thomas Vazzana brought Albright to within 41-33 with 17:43 to play in the second half.

The Blazers still held a 53-43 lead with 11:24 to play when Gilberto Benz connected on a three-pointer that ignited a 12-2 run.

Ward capped the run with a jumper, which knotted the score at 55-55 with 8:28 to play in the second half.

Davon Hill scored four points as Hood responded with a 7-0 run giving the Blazers a 62-55 lead with 6:52 remaining in regulation.

Albright used three-pointers by Ringgold and Smith to tie the score at 66-66 with 4:07 to play, which set up the final 3:17 of the second half.

Albright will return to action on Wednesday (Jan. 21) when it renews its rivalry with Alvernia at 8 p.m. on Jack McCloskey Court.
