Jane Joyce Leads Women's Basketball to Sixth-Straight Win

READING, Pa.-- Freshman Jane Joyce scored all 17 of her points in the second half to lead the Albright women's basketball team to its sixth-straight victory with a 72-58 win over Widener in Commonwealth Conference action Wednesday night in the Bollman Center.

The Lions (14-4, 8-1 Commonwealth) finished the game on a 25-8 run after trailing by three 50-47 with 9:47 to play. Joyce, who also grabbed nine rebounds, hit a jumper and Emily O'Donnell, who came off the bench to grab a game-high 11 rebounds, made two free throws to give the Lions the lead for good at 51-50 with 8:39 left in the game.

Albright, which has won six in a row for the first-time since the 2007-2008 team won seven consecutive games en route to the programs only NCAA appearance, sits in second place in conference a game behind (15-2, 9-0 CC) Stevenson.

Albright held a slim 60-58 lead following a layup by Widener's Brianna Wylie with 2:48 remaining in the second half, but the Lions scored the final 12 points, including 10 from the free-throw line, to pull away for the victory.

Both teams got off to a slow start offensively in the first half, with Albright leading 16-13 with 6:51 left in the opening stanza. The Lions went on an 11-3 run to push the lead to 27-16 on a three-point shot from Jessica Venturelli at the 2:19 mark.

Albright led 30-21 at the break on the strength of eight points from Venturelli and by holding the Pride to just 23.3 percent shooting from the floor.

Joyce scored eight of Albright's first 10 points to start the second half to keep the Lions ahead 42-35 with 13:50 remaining.

Kristina Reiter, who scored 15 of her game-high 18 points in the second half, hit back-to-back three-point shots to cut the lead to 42-41 and Allison Gallagher put the Pride ahead with a layup to cap an 8-0 run at the 12:52 mark.

Kelecia Harris scored two quick baskets to regain the lead for Albright, but Reiter made two free-throws and her three-point shot gave the advantage back to Widener 48-46 with 10:28 to play.

O'Donnell's free-throw cut the Widener lead to one, and Brianna Wylie made two from the line for the Pride to push the lead to three at 50-47 before the Lions closed the game on a big run.

Gallagher scored 17 for the Pride (8-11, 2-8 Commonwealth) and Wylie added 11 off the bench.

Joyce was 5-of-13 from the field and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line to lead the Lions, Venturelli, who was 5-of-9 from the field including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc to finish with 13 points. She also added four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Harris chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds and Kadijah Bishop scored nine points and had six rebounds.

Albright heads to Annville, Pa., on Saturday (Jan.31) for a Commonwealth Conference battle with Lebanon Valley at 4 p.m.
