READING, Pa. – The Albright women's soccer team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end on Tuesday at the hands of Alvernia as the Lions dropped a 2-1 decision to the Crusaders in a MAC Commonwealth match.
The Lions, who also suffered their first loss of the conference season, fell behind 2-0 before a late rally came up short. Albright had won its first three conference matches of the season, but that streak was ended by the Crusaders on Tuesday night.
Freshman
Payton Bogatch also had her scoreless streak in goal ended by Alvernia when the Crusaders scored at the 31:28 mark of the first period. The goal ended Bogatch's streak at 428:47.
Alvernia tallied all of their goals in the first stanza as they added another marker at the 39:25 mark of the first period.
Albright, which dropped to 7-5-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play, got a late goal from
Emily Sousa to climb to within 2-1 but were unable to complete the comeback.
Fourteen minutes into the match, Albright had their first scoring opportunity as Sousa ripped a shot driving down on the left side of the turf but her shot went high above the net.
Alvernia struck first in the 31st minute as Taylor Smith found the back of the net past Bogatch giving the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
In the 39th minute, Alvernia's Melissa Stahl tallied the second goal of the match to up the lead to 2-0. Stahl weaved around several Albright players and was able to fire the shot on target, which was her first goal of the season.
The Crusaders had a chance to go up big at halftime, but Johnna Shank's shot went high of the net.
Through 45 minutes of play, Alvernia held the edge in shots 7-5 with five on target. Bogatch made three saves compared to the Crusaders Jessica Plunkett who had two.
Albright's
Emily Saxon had a free kick opportunity in the 53rd minute, but her shot landed right into the hands of Stahl as she made a diving stop.
With just 4:26 remaining in the match, Sousa tallied her seventh goal of the year to cut the lead 2-1.
In the 88th and 89th minutes, Albright had three corner kicks and a shot by
Rebecca Mallon to tie the game up but they were unable to find the back of the net.
With the win, Alvernia improves to 3-10-1 on the season and notched its first conference win of the season to improve to 1-2. Plunkett made five stops between the pipes in 90 minutes of play to pick up the victory.
Sousa and
Brittany Lutz led the Albright offensive attack with three shots respectively.
