CHESTER, Pa. -- Sophomore
Amanda Long scored the game-winning goal at the 62:13 mark of the second period and Albright tied the school record for wins in a season with an important 2-1 MAC Commonwealth victory over Widener on Wednesday at Edith R. Dixon Field.
Long's goal broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the eventual game-winner as Albright improved to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The 10 victories ties the school record that was established by the 2012 season during head coach
Sarah Brant's first season.
Albright dominated the final 7:47 as the Lions generated two shots and three penalty corners, while Widener was able to register one shot.
Senior
Amanda Smith assisted on the Lions first goal of the season, which upped her season point total to 43 and ties the school record held by Angela Gardner.
The victory was crucial for the Lions as they attempt to secure a berth in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament. The top four seeds earn a berth into postseason play and Albright is currently in fourth place in the conference standings, one game ahead of Alvernia.
Albright took a 1-0 lead just 7:10 into the game when sophomore
Tracy Snyder scored off the assist from Smith. For Snyder it was her 14th goal of the season, which only trails Smith who has 17.
Widener, which fell to 6-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play with the loss, tied the game at 1-1 when Kaelei Renzi scored on an assist from Kayla Herr.
Long then broke the tie with her sixth goal of the season, which ranks third on the team, and the Lions were able to hold off the Pride to secure the victory.
Albright returns to action on Friday (Oct. 23) when it hosts Messiah in a conference game at 3:30 p.m. at Shirk Stadium.
