ASTON, Pa. – An 18 point performance from the floor by
Alysha Lofton lifted the women's basketball program to their first win of the year over Lancaster Bible 84-66 in the Neumann Tip-Off Tournament from The Mirenda Center Friday evening.
With the 18 point margin victory Albright improves to 1-0 on the young season while Lancaster Bible drops their first game of the season.
Albright had three other players with double figures in the first game of the year including
Nina Mazzarelli (16),
MiKayla Lea (12), and
Emily O'Donnell (11). Lea lead the team with the most rebounds with eight.
Sophomore,
Jane Joyce, contributed in a big way with nine points, four assists and four steals from the court.
In the game, Albright shot 38-for-72 (52.8%) from the field while Lancaster Bible was 21-for-58 (36.2%).
The Lions started off on the slow end of the spectrum and took the first lead of the game with 6:26 left in the first quarter 8-7 thanks to a layup by Lofton. Both teams went back and forth down the court exchanging buckets. With time winding down, Lancaster Bible claimed a 20-15 lead.
Albright responded with two-back-to –back baskets by Lea making it a 20-19 game in the opening minutes of the second quarter. With 4:25 left to play,
Emily O'Donnell went to the line as she made both shots as the Lions reclaimed the lead, 27-26.
From that point on, the Lions went on a roll to end the second quarter making the last five shots to go up 34-30. In the quarter, Albright made 12 points in the paint and eight from the bench. Albright outshot Lancaster Bible 19-10.
The opening minutes of the third quarter were neck and neck for both squads. Halfway through the quarter, Albright earned their largest lead of the night, 13 points, as the team took a commanding 52-39 point margin.
Lancaster Bible's Aubrey Folger tallied two of her 10 points in the game with less than one minute left to play in the third quarter as the home team came knocking on the door making it a 55-46 game. A jumper by Katy Stover with two seconds left brought the game evening closer cutting the Lions lead to just nine, 61-52.
The third quarter marked a very high scoring barrage for both teams as Albright held the edge 27-22.
In the final quarter, Lancaster Bible did all they could do keep up with Albright College. With three minutes and change left to play, Mazzarelli gave Albright the largest lead of the evening by 25 points (80-55).
In the final minute of play, Lancaster Bible did all they could to get in range of Albright but the Lions never looked back and with the buzzer going off the home team earned their first win of the 2015-16 season.
Sixty two of Albright's buckets came from the paint and 24 off of the bench in the 84-66 victory.
With the win, Albright advances to the championship game as the team takes on Neumann on
Saturday, November 14th as the tip-off set to begin at 3 p.m.
