Albright Edged by Haverford in MAC-Centennial Challenge

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Despite shooting a blistering 58.2 percent from the floor and receiving 21 points from DeJuan Smith, the Albright men's basketball team lost to Haverford 90-83 on day two of the MAC-Centennial Challenge at Memorial Hall on the campus of Muhlenberg.

The Lions made 32-of-55 shots from the floor, including an 8-of-18 effort from beyond the three-point line, but it was not enought to topple the Fords.

Haverford, which improved to 1-1 on the season, shot 45.8 percent from the field and took advantage of its free throw opportunities by converting 27-of-38 attempts. The Fords also only turned the ball over six times for the game.

Haverford placed three players in double figres led by Walt Plumlee who scored a game-high 30 points. Kahlil Garnes finished with 23 points and Matt Sherman added 19 points for the Fords.

Josh Marquez had 19 points for Albright and Calvert Gantz finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Evan Ward added seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds off the Albright bench.

Haverford, which never trailed in the game, raced out to a 16-2 lead at the start of the game as Plumlee had seven points and Garnes added five points during the run.

Albright, which dropped to 0-2 on the season, rallied to within 22-19 when Gantz scored back-to-back layups with 2:43 before halftime.

After a pair of free throws by Marquez cut the Haverford lead to 24-21, the Fords responded with an 11-4 run to stretch the lead to 35-25 with 34 seconds remaining in the first period.

Smith converted a four-point play for Albright to cut the lead to 35-29, but Sherman drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer giving Haverford a 38-29 lead at the break.

Joe Scibelli gave Haverford a 40-31 lead early in the second half with a jumper, but the Lions would rally.

Omari Ringgold scored six points during a 13-5 Albright run that brought the Lions to within 45-44 with 14:26 to play in the game, but that would be as close as Albright would get for the remainder of the contest.

Haverford upped the lead to 58-51 with 10:54 remaining, but the Lions used a three-pointer by Ringgold and back-to-back baskets by Smith to trim the lead to 62-60 at the 7:28 mark of the second period.

A layup by Marquez brought Albright to within 81-76 with 57 seconds remaining, but Haverford responded by making nine free throw attempts down the stretch to secure the victory.

Albright returns to action on Wednesday (Nov. 18) when it visits Penn State Berks for a 7 p.m. non-conference game.
