LANCASTER, Pa. – Tournament most valuable player
Kelecia Harris had 10 points and three rebounds and Albright tied the school record for the best start in school history with a 79-59 victory over Elizabethtown in the championship game of the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic on Sunday.
Harris averaged 14.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game in the Lions victories over Washington & Lee in the opening round and Elizabethtown in the championship game.
With the win, Albright improved to 5-0 on the season and tied the school record set by the 2007-08 team for the best start in school history.
Harris was joined on the all-tournament team by sophomore
Nina Mazzarelli who scored a season-high 19 points in the victory. She had 11 points and five assists in the opening game win over Washington & Lee.
After having five players reach double figures in the victory over Washington & Lee, the Lions had four players score in double figures in Sunday's championship game.
Alysha Lofton posted her fifth consecutive game with double figures as she scored 15 points, while junior
Shannon Thomas added a season-high 15 points.
Albright shot 51.6 percent from the floor in the victory, which marked the third time in five games that the Lions have shot more than 50.0 percent from the floor.
The Lions shot only eight free throws in the championship game as they turned to the outside to cruise to the title game victory. Albright made a season-high nine three-pointers and shot a season-best 60.0 (9-of-15) percent from beyond the three-point line. Mazzarelli was 5-of-7 and Thomas was 3-of-5 from beyond the arc to lead the Lions.
Albright captured its second tournament title this season after winning the Neumann Tip-Off Classic to open the season.
Elizabethtown, which dropped to 3-2 on the season, was led by Emily Martin who scored a game-high 20 points. Rachel Forjan added 13 points for the Blue Jays.
Martin joined Harris and Mazzarelli on the all-tournament team as did Anajha Burnett of Franklin & Marshall and Jackie Clifford of Washington & Lee.
Mazzarelli got Albright off to a blistering start in the first quarter. After Elizabethtown took a 2-0 lead on a basket by Alyssa Aichele, Mazzarelli connected on three consecutive three-pointers to give Albright a 9-4 lead with 6:51 to play in the opening quarter.
Led by Mazzarelli, Albright used a 16-2 run to jump out to a 19-6 lead with 4:23 to play in the first quarter.
After Martin converted a pair of free throws to trim the Albright lead to 23-11, the Lions closed the first quarter on a 10-0 run as Thomas and Lofton each drilled three-pointers giving Albright a 33-11 lead after the opening quarter.
Lofton scored four points to lead the Lions in the second quarter, and Thomas drained a three-pointer with 26 seconds remaining to give Albright a 49-21 lead at halftime.
Albright continued to stretch out the lead in the third quarter as the Lions increased the lead to as many as 34 points.
Elizabethtown outscored the Lions 18-10 in the fourth quarter, which marked its only scoring advantage in the contest.
Albright will return to action, and seek to break the school record for the best start to a season, on Dec. 2 when it hosts Hood at 6 p.m. in the Bollman Center.
