READING, Pa. -- Junior
Omari Ringgold led four players in double figures with a game-high 19 points and Albright opened MAC Commonwealth play with a 63-56 victory over Hood on Wednesday in the Bollman Center.
Ringgold finished the game 6-of-12 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from the three-point line, and was 3-of-4 from the free throw line to lead the Lions to the victory.
Senior
Evan Ward added 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, and
DeJuan Smith tallied 12 points and
Jaylin Calloway finished with 11 points off the bench.
Albright, which improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play, jumped out to a 28-19 lead at halftime by holding Hood to just 28 percent shooting from the floor.
Four of the Lions starters, Ward,
Calvert Gantz, Ringgold and Smith, combined to score 50 of Albright's 63 points on the night.
Hood, which suffered its first loss of the season, dropped to 4-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Blazers were led by Davon Hill who finished with 16 points, while Michael Robinson and Daniel Wegener each scored 10 points.
Albright never trailed in the game and jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first half as Ward had back-to-back baskets and Smith drilled a three-pointer.
Hood answered with a 7-0 run of its own and tied the game at 7-7 when Trevor Magnuski converted a layup with 14:49 to play in the opening half.
Albright took the lead for good on a three-pointer by Ringgold and stretched the lead to 15-7 when Calloway came off the bench to connect from long range with 10:25 to play in the opening half.
Albright took its largest lead of the first half at 28-16 after Ringgold scored back-to-back buckets with 35 seconds remaining in the period, but the Blazers trimmed the halftime lead to 28-19 when Hill converted a three-point play.
Seven consecutive points from Smith gave the Lions their largest lead of the game at 40-25 with 14:33 to play in the game.
A jumper by Tanner Ruths cut the Albright lead to 40-32 with 13:05 to play, but
Josh Marquez made two free throws and Ward made back-to-back baskets to increase the Lions lead to 46-34 with 10:54 to play.
Four consecutive Hood free throws cut the Lions lead to 51-43, but Ringgold drilled a three-pointer to push the margin to 54-43 with 9:00 remaining in the contest.
Hill then scored five points during a 7-0 Hood run that cut Albright's lead to 54-50 with 7:31 to play in the second period.
Ward and Wegener exchanged baskets before Ringgold iced the game for the Lions with a free throw and a three-pointer that gave Albright a 60-52 lead with 1:41 left to play.
Ringgold tacked on two free throws with 28 seconds remaining before Hood scored a pair of baskets at the end of regulation.
Albright continues MAC Commonwealth play on Saturday (Dec. 5) when it visits Lebanon Valley for a 3 p.m. contest.
