Susquehanna Edges Albright for Crowne Plaza Title

READING, Pa. -- For the second time this season Albright pushed a top 20 team to the brink, but Tyler Hoagland converted a driving layup with 3.7 seconds to play in regulation lifting No. 17 Susquehanna to a 62-60 victory over the Lions in the championship game of the Crowne Plaza Holiday Tournament.

Following the basket by Hoagland, Albright inbounded the ball and Jaylin Calloway appeared to beat the buzzer with a game-winning three point shot, but the officials ruled the game clock had not started when a Susquehanna player deflected the inbounds pass and waved off the basket.

Albright, which dropped to 4-7 on the season, took a 58-57 lead with 1:39 to play when Evan Ward scored on a putback.

Tournament most valuable player Steven Weidlich put the Crusaders back in front with a three-point play with 1:27 left to play in the game.

DeJuan Smith tied the game with 7.8 seconds remaining in regulation with a strong drive to the basket, which tied the score at 60-60 to set up the heroics of Hoagland.

Susquehanna, which improved to 11-0 on the season, was led by Weidlich who scored 20 points and collected 13 rebounds. Josh Miller finished with 11 points and Dan Weiss added 10 points and five rebounds for the Crusaders.

Omari Ringgold led Albright with 17 points, while Ward finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Smith added 13 points, while Calloway finished with nine points for the Lions.

Albright led only twice in the first half and the Crusaders shot 46.2 percent from the floor on their way to a 33-26 lead at the intermission.

Susquehanna took its largest lead of the game at 35-26 when Miller scored inside with 19:50 to play in the game.

Albright responded with a 7-0 run and cut the lead to 35-33 when Ringgold connected on a three-pointer with 16:24 to play in the second half.

Another Albright three-pointer, this time by Smith, brought the Lions to within 41-40 with 13:59 to play, but Weidlich answered with back-to-back three-pointers to increase the Susquehanna lead to 47-40 at the 13:15 mark.

Albright answered with a 7-2 run, capped by a three-pointer from Calloway, that cut the Crusader lead to 49-47 with 10:29 left in the contest.

Ryan Traub answered with a jumper to push the lead to 51-47, but Albright gained the lead with a 6-0 run. Ward scored inside, Ringgold made a pair of free throws and Brandon Lindsay converted a twisting layup to give the Lions a 53-51 lead with 6:15 left to play.

Dan Weiss scored inside to tie the game, but Calloway drilled a three-pointer giving Albright its largest lead of the game at 56-53 with 3:42 left in the period.

Two free throws by Miller and a basket by Weiss regained the lead for the Crusaders and set the stage for the dramatic final two minutes.

Ward and Ringgold represented Albright on the all-tournament team, while Weidlich was joined by Traub. Tyler Seelman of Alfred and Sam Gordon of Johns Hopkins were also named to the all-tournament team.

Johns Hopkins captured the consolation game with a 77-69 victory over Alfred.

Albright will resume play on Saturday (Jan. 2) when it travels to Stevenson for a MAC Commonwealth game beginning at 1 p.m.
