Late Run Lifts Arcadia Past Albright 68-62

GLENSIDE, Pa. – Albright sophomore Omari Ringgold scored a game-high 20 points, but Joe Brown scored 18 points and Arcadia used a late run to pull away from the Lions on its way to a 68-62 Commonwealth Conference victory on Saturday in Alumni Gymnasium.

After Nelson Goodwater gave Albright a 51-50 lead on a layup with 5:01 to play in the second half Arcadia responded with a 9-3 run to take control of the game.

A free throw from Jose Figueroa tied the game at 51-51 and then two foul shots each from Ryan Kelley and Brown gave Arcadia a 55-51 lead with 2:05 to play.

Ringgold cut the lead to 55-54 following the completion of a three-point play, but John Landro answered with a three-pointer and a free throw by Alex Cohen gave the Knights a 59-54 lead with 52 seconds remaining in the game.

Arcadia then made 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.

Albright outshot Arcadia 48.2 percent to 43.8 percent, but the Knights made nine three-point baskets and outscored the Lions 17-5 from the foul line.

Albright dropped to 9-13 on the season and 5-9 in the Commonwealth Conference, while Arcadia improved to 12-11 overall and 8-6 in conference play.

It marked the third consecutive win for Arcadia in the series after Albright had won the first 11 meetings between the two teams.

Ringgold was 9-of-19 from the field and also added five rebounds and a steal to pace the Lions. DeJuan Smith finished with 13 points and six rebounds and Thomas Vazzana added eight points and seven rebounds.

Arcadia also received 17 points from Torrell Candelaria and 13 points from John Landro who was 4-of-6 from the three-point line.

The game was tightly contested throughout and featured 17 lead changes and the score was tied nine times.

Smith gave Albright a 25-23 lead on a layup with 3:22 to play in the opening half, but the Knights closed the half on a 9-2 run to take a 32-27 lead into the intermission.

Albright opened the second half on a 6-0 run and took a 33-32 lead on a layup by Smith with 18:06 remaining in the game.

The teams traded the lead until the Lions took their largest lead of the game at 45-40 with 11:44 to play on a layup by Ringgold and a three-pointer from Jaylin Calloway.

Landro drilled a three-pointer and Brown followed with a layup to tie the score at 45-45 with 9:36 left in the second period.

Ringgold put Albright back in front at 47-45 with a jumper with 9:10 to play, but Candelaria answered with a three-pointer giving the Knights a 48-47 lead with 7:08 left in the game.

Evan Ward and Brown exchanged baskets before Goodwater gave the Lions their final lead of the game with a layup with 5:01 left.

Albright will return to action on Tuesday (Feb. 17) when it hosts Hood in a Commonwealth Conference game at 8 p.m. in the Bollman Center.
