Omari Ringgold and
DeJuan Smith each scored 12 points, but Harrison Deyo scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds leading Alvernia to a 70-58 Commonwealth Conference victory over Albright on Saturday in the Lions season finale in the Bollman Center.
Lamont Clark finished with 22 points and Charles Cooper finished with 11 points, including two three-point baskets that turned the tide in the contest.
After
Evan Ward connected on a jumper giving Albright a 46-45 lead with 12:22 to play in the game, Cooper hit back-to-back three-pointers during an 8-0 run that gave Alvernia a 53-46 lead with 10:43 to play.
Jaylin Calloway converted a layup to trim the lead to 53-48, but Alex Shippen scored inside to up the lead to 55-48 with 9:18 left in the game.
Calloway answered with another layup, but a jumper and a free throw from Clark and a basket by Kirby Turner pushed the Crusaders lead to 60-50 with 6:53 left in the second period.
A
Vince Lombardi layup and a free throw from
Johnathan Amoroso cut the lead to 60-53, but Clark scored five consecutive points to increase the margin to 65-53 at the 3:02 mark of the second period.
Alvernia took its largest lead of the game at 70-55 when Deyo made one of two free throw attempts with 1:30 left to play.
Albright finished the season with a 9-15 overall record and a 5-11 mark in the Commonwealth Conference. Alvernia finished the regular season with a 15-9 record overall and a 10-6 mark in league play.
Alvernia shot a blistering 61.5 percent from the floor in the second half to post the victory.
Ward added nine points and 11 rebounds for the Lions, while
Gilberto Benz finished with six points and two assists.
Seniors
Devin Brown and
Casey Burke played their final games in an Albright uniform on Saturday. Brown finished with eight points, three assists and two steals, while Burke had two points, five rebounds and a steal.
Albright raced out to an early lead in the first half.
The Lions took an 18-10 lead with Benz drilled a three-pointer with 8:53 to play in the opening half.
Harrison cut the lead to 18-12 with a layup, but Benz connected on a pair of free throws to bump the lead to 20-12 with 8:07 to play.
Alvernia responded with a 5-0 run, capped by a dunk by Harrison, to trim the Albright lead to 20-17 with 6:51 left in the first.
Burke and Ward connected on back-to-back jumpers to increase the lead to 24-17, but Harrison answered with a layup cutting the lead to 24-19 with 5:49 to play.
The Crusaders got a big momentum boost on their next possession. Shippen missed on a three-pointer and Burke was called for a technical foul during the battle for the loose ball.
Harrison made two free throws on the foul and Mike Miller made one of two on the technical foul to cut the Albright lead to 24-22 with 5:24 left.
The teams traded free throws and a jumper by Smith gave Albright a 29-25 lead with 1:32 before halftime.
The Crusaders rallied to tie the score on a basket by Turner and a jumper by Miller before halftime sending the teams to the intermission deadlocked at 29-29.
