ST. DAVIDS, Pa. -- The Albright women's lacrosse team used a balanced attack to secure a 15-7 season-opening road victory over Eastern on Wednesday afternoon at Olson Field.
Freshman
Sydney Nankervis scored three goals and added an assist to register four points in her Lion debut, while sophomore
Danielle Carey had five points on two goals and three assists.
Juniors
Amanda Smith,
Erin Farrell and
Tori Meyer each scored two goals and added an assist. Sophomores
Jacqui Montague and
Mariah Cullen added two goals apiece.
Albright built a 5-1 lead at the break pouring 16 shots on goal in the opening 30 minutes.
Eastern quickly scored to make it a three-goal contest, but the Lions responded with goals from Nankervis and Montague in less than a minute to up the lead to 7-2.
After Eastern responded to cut the lead to 7-3, the Lions notched the next three goals to push the lead to 10-3. Farrell, Smith and Meyer scored for the Lions.
The Eagles scored three in a row to make it a 10-6 contest and Albright called a timeout with 16:10 left.
The score stayed that way until Nankervis ignited a three-goal outburst with a goal with 8:58 remaining, Cullen and Farrell then added tallies to give the Lions a 13-6 lead with 7:45 to play and put the game out of reach.
Junior
Emily Hutson started in goal and made two saves to pick up the victory for Albright. Sophomore
Hayley Joyce entered with 7:45 left in the second half and finished the game in net.
Cortney Andes made 18 saves in goal for the Eagles, 11 of which came in the first half.
Albright improved to 1-0 on the season, while Eastern dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
Albright returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 28) at 1 p.m. when it travels to Collegeville, Pa., for a non-conference match with Ursinus.
