Albright Drops Road Contest to Stevenson 85-73

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – DeJuan Smith led four Albright players in double figures with 19 points, but Christian Roberts scored a game-high 25 points leading Stevenson to an 85-73 Commonwealth Conference victory over the Lions on Wednesday in the Owings Mills Gymnasium.

Albright shot 50.9 percent from the floor, but the Mustangs shot 59.6 percent from the field including making 8-of-15 from the three-point line.

Roberts was 5-of-6 from the three-point line and 9-of-11 from the field to lead the Mustangs. Justin Kuntz added 20 points for Stevenson, while Erik Fisher had 16 points and Colby Giacubeno finished with 14.

Smith was 3-of-5 from the three-point line and 6-of-6 from the free throw line to post his fifth consecutive double-figure scoring game. Gilberto Benz had 15 points,  Omari Ringgold added 14 points and Thomas Vazzana finished with a career-high 12 points.

Stevenson improved to 15-5 overall and 8-3 in conference play, while Albright dropped to 8-11 on the season and 4-7 in the Commonwealth and saw its two-game winning streak halted.

Stevenson, which shot 63.0 percent from the floor in the second half, outscored Albright 52-36 in the paint.

A three-pointer from Smith cut the Stevenson lead to 7-5, but three straight baskets by Fisher and a three-pointer from Roberts pushed the Mustang lead to 16-7 with 14:44 to play in the first period.

Back-to-back layups by Smith and Vince Lombardi brought Albright to within 16-11, but Stevenson answered with a 10-4 run to up the lead to 26-15 with 9:41 left in the first half.

The Mustangs led by as many as 13 points on two occasions in the first half, but Albright rallied to within 37-31 after a pair of free throws by Smith with 1:38 to play.

The Mustangs took a 40-31 lead at halftime after Roberts drilled a three-pointer to extend the lead.

A three-pointer by Smith brought Albright to within 46-42 with 15:54 to play in the game, but Stevenson responded with a 9-4 run to take a 55-46 lead with 13:44 to play.

Smith hit a three-pointer and Ringgold scored inside to cut the lead to 55-52, but the Mustangs used a 7-0 run to push the lead to 62-51 with 10:39 left in the game.

The Lions got to within 66-60 with 8:09 to play, but that would be as close as they would get for the remainder of the game.

Stevenson took its largest lead of the game at 81-67 on a three-pointer by Roberts with 1:40 left in the game.

Albright returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 7) when it hosts Lycoming at 4 p.m. in the Bollman Center.
