Harris Tops 1,000 Career-Points In Win Over Lycoming

READING, Pa. – Albright junior forward Kelecia Harris became the 14th player in school history to eclipse the 1,000 point plateau as she scored 14 points leading the Lions to a 62-54 Commonwealth Conference victory over visiting Lycoming Saturday afternoon inside the Bollman Center.

Harris scored point number 1,000 when she converted a free-throw to complete a three-point play with 14:22 to play in the second half. The junior finished the game 4-of-6 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line to finish with 14 points. She also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season.

Albright stopped a two-game losing skid with the victory, and improved to 15-6 overall and 9-3 in the Commonwealth Conference. The Lions are currently in second place, one and a half games ahead of Messiah, who they visit in their next game on Wednesday.

Shannon Thomas, who added 14 points and seven rebounds, connected on 5-of-8 from the field and was 3-of-5 on three-point shots. Emily O'Donnell came off the bench to score 12-points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and 2-of-3 from the line, and Jessica Venturelli also reached double figures with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field. Venturelli led the Lions with four assists and also grabbed five rebounds.

Albright led 13-8 with 12:43 to play in the first half, when it went on 10-0 run to push the lead to 23-8 with 6:58 remaining in the half. The Warriors responded with an 18-3 run to cut the deficit to 26-21 with 1:14 left in the first.

Thomas then connected on her second three-pointer of the half with 24 seconds left, and O'Donnell's layup as time expired gave Albright a 31-21 edge at the break.

Thomas led the way with 10 first-half points, while Harris added seven and O'Donnell score six points on 3-of-3 from the field.

The Warriors started the second half with a 9-0 burst and cut the lead to 31-30 at the 16:05 mark. Venturelli stemmed the tide with a three-point shot for the Lions first points of the half to push the lead back to 34-30 with 15:13 to play.

A free throw from Nicole Calella, who scored a game-high 18 points, and an Ali Derr jumper brought Lycoming to within 34-33 with 14:39 to play.

Harris then scored her 1,000th career point on a three-point play that upped the Albright lead to 37-33 with 14:22 remaining in the game.

The teams traded baskets and the Lions held a 43-39 lead following a Calella jumper with 8:40 to play.

Albright then went on a 9-1 run, started by three free throws from Devan Horka, and capped by four straight points from Venturelli to break the game open and give the Lions and insurmountable 52-40 lead with 3:41 remaining.

The Warriors who are 14-8 overall and 6-7 in the Commonwealth could get no closer than six points the rest of the way.

Albright shot 21-of-44 from the field for 47.7 percent, and dominated off the glass finishing with a 45-to-25 advantage.

Saturday's game was the Lions annual breast cancer awareness event and Albright has supported the Play 4Kay initiative in each of the past seven years. Prior to the game, the Albright basketball team honored Ellen O'Donnell, the mother of Lion junior Emily O'Donnell, who is a breast cancer survivor.

The Lions are next in action, when they head to Grantham, Pa. on Wednesday (Feb. 11) for a pivotal confrontation at third-place Messiah at 6 p.m.
