Riley Gerenda tossed a complete game six-hit shutout as Albright captured the opener 2-0, but the Lions could not hold on to a two run lead in the nightcap in falling 3-2 and having to settle for a split of the doubleheader with visiting Hood Sunday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action at the Albright Softball Field.
The Lions (9-3, 2-2 Commonwealth) scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning of game one to break a scoreless tie.
Freshman
Brianne Long opened the bottom of the fourth with a single up the middle for Albright, with one out freshman
Regina Milburn was hit by a pitch to bring up junior
Sammi O'Connor who delivered a seeing-eye single up the middle to score Long and give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Junior
Sera Stull sent a two-out single to center to score Milburn and increase the lead to 2-0.
Gerenda pitched 7.0 innings and allowed six hits, walked two and struck out five to improve to 5-0. It marked the fifth consecutive shoutout for Gerenda as she posses a 0.00 earned- run average in 31.0 innings pitched.
Kayli Paugh struck out eight in 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and walking four to fall to 1-4 on the season for Hood.
The Blazers (3-11, 2-2 Commonwealth), took the nightcap with an unearned run in the top of six to break a 2-2 tie.
Albright jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two, scoring two runs off the Blazers pitcher Sophie Leaman.
Freshman
Kaela Romano started the uprising with a one-out single to left, and with two outs O'Connor singled to move Romano to second. Freshman
Armida Roman laced a double down the left-field line to bring home both runners and give the Lions the early 2-0 edge.
O'Connor pitched game two for the Lions and was in control with two outs and the bases empty in the top of the third when Hood rallied to tie the game.
Leaman doubled down the left-field line to bring home Kristen Scott who had singled. Kristy Erfurdt then singled to right to score Leaman and knot the contest at 2-2.
Another two out rally plated the eventual winning run for the Blazers in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Kayli Paugh reached on an error, a walk moved her to second and she scored on a single to right by Roo Saglimbeni to give Hood the 3-2 advantage and win.
Albright put two runners on in the bottom of the sixth, but could not push across the tying run.
O'Connor was the hard luck loser allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out nine in 7.0 innings of work.
Leaman captured her first victory of the season to improve to 1-5 after surrendering two earned runs on six hits with two walks and striking out four.
Albright returns to action on Tuesday, Mar. 31, when it hosts Arcadia for another Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
