Men’s Soccer Takes Early Lead But Falls to Cabrini in Overtime

READING, Pa. – The Albright men's soccer program fell to Cabrini in overtime Wednesday evening at Shirk Stadium in non-conference action 3-2.  Sophomore Nathan Hughes and junior Andrew Sussingham tallied the goals for Albright.

Albright jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead only to see Cabrini score two second-half goals to force overtime. The Cavaliers then capped the comeback with the game winner in extra time.

With the loss, Albright falls to 1-5-1 on the young season while Cabrini improves to 6-1-2 on the year.

The Lions netminder, Austin Aldinger, made a total of four saves in the game taking the loss in 97 minutes of play.  CJ Serratore of Cabrini stopped seven shots on net as he earned the win.

Albright came out strong as they scored the first goal of the game off of Hughes foot with 8:02 showing on the clock.  The Lions continued to have an explosive attack in the opening minutes of the first fame. Sussingham tallied the Lions second goal of the game to take a commanding 2-0 edge with 15:19 on the clock. Senior Oumar Diawara was credited with the assist, his third of the season.

Going into halftime, Albright held the edge in corner kicks 3-2. The Cavaliers put up nine shots compared to the Lions six.

Cabrini came out very strong in the second half of play. At the 58th minute Jared Irwin tallied the first goal of the evening for the Cavaliers to make it 2-1.  Cabrini continued to keep the ball on the offensive end adding 11 shots in the second frame. With time beginning to wind down, Cabrini's Joe Fiore notched the equalizer with 73:01 left to play in the game as Lucas Lampertti earned the assist.

Albright's Austin Phillips had several chances to put the Lions on the board but was not able to as he his shots were blocked and saved in the 82nd and 85th minute. Sussingham blasted the last shot of regulation for the Lions with 85:38 left to play in the second stanza but it went sailing high above the net.

In the overtime, Cabrini garnered one corner kick at the 92nd minute. Five minutes later, Irwin tallied the game-winning goal for the Cavaliers with 97:39 showing on the clock, his second goal of the game to push Cabrini to victory in a thrilling game.

Susssingham led the team with four shots in the match with one coming on goal. Philips and Lawrence Pierre followed with three apiece.

Up next, Albright welcomes Eastern to Shirk Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 26) at 7 p.m. in non-conference play.
