WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Albright coaching staff spent last week preparing the Lions for a 60-minute battle against Lycoming. That work paid off as the Lions answered the bell at every turn in Saturday's Middle Atlantic Conference victory over the Warriors at David Person Field.
Brian Wickkiser rushed for a career-high 127 yards and scored four touchdowns leading Albright to a 32-10 victory over Lycoming. Wickkiser became the first Albright player to score four touchdowns in a game since Josan Holmes scored four times against Widener in 2010 and became the first Lion to rush for three touchdowns in a game since Ty Hughes accomplished the feat against Kean in the 2012 season opener.
With the win, Albright remained undefeated on the season and improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the MAC and halted a five-game losing streak to Lycoming. The Lions last victory over Lycoming came in 2009 when Albright posted a 26-7 win.
The first challenge presented to the Lions occurred on their first offensive snap when
Mike Knight's pass was intercepted by John Peters at the Albright 37-yard line, but the Lion defense was up to the task as it held Lycoming to just two yards and forced a punt.
The defensive unit stood tall again later in the first quarter when Lycoming drove to the Albright 1-yard line.
Kali Boyce forced a fumble and recovered it at the 1-yard line to keep the Warriors out of the end zone.
The Albright offense then stepped up as it drove 99 yards in 15 plays and chewed up 7:42 on the clock to take the lead. Wickkiser scored his first touchdown of the game from 12 yards out putting Albright in front 7-0 with 13:25 to play in the second quarter.
Lycoming, which dropped to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play, answered with a scoring drive of its own. Devon Flynn connected on a 29-yard field goal to trim the Lions lead to 7-3.
Following an exchange of punts, Albright extended its lead with an 8-play, 50-yard drive. Knight found Wickkiser from five yards out to stretch the Lions lead to 14-3 with 1:27 to play in the opening half.
The next challenge for the Lions occurred on the first drive of the second half when Lycoming needed just three plays to drive 80 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Chase Whiteman found Ryan Umpleby for a 65-yard touchdown that brought the Warriors to within 14-10 with 13:41 to play in the third quarter.
The Albright defense stepped up to the challenge again as senior
Steve Barroso intercepted a pass two series later at the Lycoming 40-yard line.
The Lions offense capitalized by marching 31 yards in two plays, aided by a face-mask penalty, to stretch the lead. Wickkiser scored from a yard out to push the Albright lead to 21-10 with 6:26 to play in the third quarter.
The Lions took their next possession following a short Lycoming punt. Knight connected with
Gerrod Gainer for 27 yards on first down and Wickkiser punched it across from six yards out on the next play.
Albright holder
David Gavrilov took an errant snap on the extra-point attempt and scooted into the end zone to give the Lions a 29-10 lead with 4:57 remaining in the third quarter.
Senior All-American
Daniel Sobolewski capped the scoring for the Lions as he connected on a 50-yard field goal with 8:25 to play in the fourth quarter. It marked the second 50-plus field goal of the season for Sobolewski who previously made a 51-yard field goal against Widener.
Wickkiser finished the day with 127 yards on 26 carries to pace the Lions offensive attack. He had three rushing touchdowns and also hauled in a touchdown reception.
Knight was 14-of-21 for 150 yards and touchdown, while
Malik Jackson led the receivers with four receptions.
Jamal Hayden recorded six tackles, including a sack, to lead the Albright defense. Barroso,
JaVaughn Patterson,
Colton Ryan and
Kevin Mason each finished with five tackles.
Albright will put its undefeated record on the line next Saturday (Oct. 3) when it visits Misericordia in a Middle Atlantic Conference game at 1 p.m.
