OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Senior
Emily O'Donnell converted a layup as time expired lifting No. 20 Albright to a 63-61 victory over Stevenson in a MAC Commonwealth game on Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
Stephanie Martinez tied the game at 61-61 when she drilled a three-pointer with 5.7 seconds left to play in regulation.
Following an Albright timeout, the Lions inbounded the ball to
Shannon Thomas who drove to her right and found O'Donnell all alone under the basket for the game-winning shot.
The victory by Albright ended a five-game losing streak to Stevenson and extracted a measure of revenge after the Mustangs topped the Lions in last season's conference title game.
Albright remained undefeated on the season as the Lions improved to 11-0 overall and 3-0 in MAC Commonwealth play.
Stevenson fell to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in league play with the loss.
Kelecia Harris and Thomas each finished with 14 points to lead the Lions, while
Nina Mazzarelli added 12 points.
Harris, who was 6-of-9 from the floor for the game, broke the Albright career field goal record with her six baskets. She has 547 career field goals, which broke the previous record of 545 set by Jarra Rusnock.
Sara Tarbert, who scored a school-record 41 points in the Mustangs last game, finished with a game-high 20 points. Martinez added 11 points and Caitlin Roy chipped in with 10 points.
Harris scored inside on a layup with 5:19 to play in the fourth quarter, which gave the Lions a seemingly safe 55-45 lead.
Stevenson responded with an 11-1 run and tied the game at 56-56 on a basket by Imani Sanders with 2:03 left to play.
Alysha Lofton put Albright back in front 58-56 with a short jumper with 1:41 left in the fourth quarter.
Tarbert answered on the other end for the Mustangs with a layup that tied the game at 58-58 with 1:25 left in regulation.
Thomas regained the lead for Albright with a layup with 32 seconds remaining and Stevenson turned the ball over on its next trip down the floor.
But the Lions missed two free throws following an intentional foul, but Mazzarelli grabbed the rebound following the second miss and was fouled.
She was able to convert one of the two free throw attempts upping the Albright lead to 61-58 with 11 seconds left to play.
Following a Stevenson timeout, Martinez then tied the game with her three-pointer setting the stage for the dramatic ending.
Albright returns to action on Monday (Jan. 4) when it hosts No. 2 Amherst at 4 p.m. in the Bollman Center.
