CHESTER, Pa. – Senior
Kelecia Harris scored 18 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked six shots and No. 18 Albright held off a furious fourth-quarter rally by Widener to post a 58-49 MAC Commonwealth victory over the Pride on Wednesday in the Schwartz Center.
Albright built a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter only to see Widener rally back into the game, but the Lions closed the game with a 7-0 run to finish off the Pride.
Widener used an 8-0 run to climb to within 47-42 with 5:04 before sophomore
Alysha Lofton ended the run with a layup to increase the Lions lead to 49-42 at the 4:42 mark of the fourth quarter.
Two free throws by Ally Ferrucci and a three-pointer by Allison Gallagher brought the Pride to within 49-47 with 3:29 to play.
Harris increased the Albright lead to 51-47, but Brianna Wylie answered with a basket to cut the margin to 51-49 with 2:50 remaining.
Albright, which extended its winning streak to five straight with the win, closed the game with a 7-0 run to secure the victory.
Nina Mazzarelli and Harris each made a pair of free throws and
Shannon Thomas added a jumper to extend the Albright lead to 57-49 with 1:03 to play in the fourth quarter.
Mazzarelli closed out the game-deciding run with a free throw with 26 seconds to play that capped the run.
Albright improved to 17-2 overall and 9-1 in conference play with the win, while Widener dropped to 12-7 overall and 5-5 in league play.
Harris finished the game 8-of-16 from the floor and also added three steals. While Mazzarelli added 10 points and four rebounds.
Lofton added five points, 11 rebounds, three blocked shots, three steals and two assists, while Thomas finished with nine points and
Devan Horka added eight points.
Wylie led Widener with 13 points and 16 rebounds, while Ferrucci and Julia Venturelli each had 11 points for the Pride.
Albright shot 44.2 percent from the floor, while limiting Widener to just 28.6 percent field goal shooting.
Albright took control of the game with a 13-0 run that spanned the end of the first quarter and the opening of the second quarter, which gave the Lions a 24-11 lead with 5:37 to play in the second quarter.
The Lions held a 28-22 lead at the intermission.
Albright returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 30) when it visits Hood for a 1 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game.
