Women's Soccer Defeats Alvernia 3-0 for Senior Night Win

READING, Pa- The Albright women's soccer team delivered the best present of all to its six graduating seniors: a 3-0 win over cross-town rival Alvernia University Wednesday night at Shirk Stadium and securing the program a spot in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament.

Despite keeping the pressure on the Crusaders (6-10, 3-3 MACC) throughout the first half, the Lions (9-7-1, 3-3-1) broke the scoreless tie in the 26th minute. Senior Emily Sousa was dragged down in the penalty box by her opponent awarding Albright a penalty kick. Morgan Valera stepped up to take the shot versus Taylor Smith, who was filling in at the net as Alvernia's starting goalkeeper is injured. Even though Smith managed to get a hand on the ball, Valera's shot was hit hard enough to reach the back of the net to put the Lions up 1-0.

The pressure remained on Alvernia after halftime as Albright dominated the ball. Less than three minutes removed from intermission, Valera struck again. This time, the midfielder sailed a beautiful shot from 30 yards out that Smith had no chance at stopping to put the Lions up 2-0. The Lions had numerous chances to extend their lead in the minutes after as Sousa blasted a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar and was inches from going in. Valera experienced a similar moment as her shot also bounced off the crossbar. Sophomore Brittany Lutz would eventually extend Albright's lead to three in the 80th minute. The forward shot the ball low and to the left of Smith from about 20 yards out to score Albright's third and final goal.

The Lions held the edge in shots and corner kicks with Albright outshooting their opponents 22 to 3 and recording nine corner kicks to the Crusaders two. Valera, Crissy Terraces, and Sousa all led the team with five shots, while senior Natalie Wilson and Lutz recorded two apiece. Goalkeeper Alexis Tunney was forced to make only one save in the match.

Prior to the match, the Lions honored seniors Sousa, Wilson, Suzanne Kuhrmann, Dylan Shipe, Megan O'Brien, Rebecca Mallon along with manager Renee Mackunis for their commitment and dedication to the Albright women's soccer program.
