Football Wins at Widener, 33-9

CHESTER, Pa. – Quarterback Alec Vignola threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns while also catching a touchdown pass to lead the Albright football team to a 33-9 victory at Widener on Saturday. The Lions scored 23 unanswered points to take control of the game after the teams traded field goals in the first quarter. Defensive back Alex Isaac had two interceptions in the third quarter.

The Lions (6-2, 6-1) got its field goal on the opening series of the game. Kevin Goetz converted from 29 yards out to cap a nine-play drive that covered 52 yards. Widener (5-3, 5-2) took advantage of a Vignola interception to tie the score. Widener took over at the Albright 6, giving the Lions' defense a victory in holding the drive to a field goal.

Albright pulled away in the second quarter. Vignola threw his first of two touchdown passed to Vinny Williams from 21 yards early in the second quarter to make it 10-3. Vignola's second interception turned into a positive when it helped lead to Albright's next score. That pick occurred deep in Widener territory, pinning the Pride at its own 3-yard line. A Widener fumble that it recovered in its own end zone gave the Lions a safety and a 12-3 lead with 3:40 left in the half.

Kyle Dickerson returned the ensuing free kick to the Albright 45. Vignola hit Williams for 40 yards on the first play of the drive to put Albright in the red zone, and Vignola found Williams four plays later for the pair's second touchdown. That sent the Lions into the half with a 19-3 lead. Williams finished with eight catches for 187 yards and two touchdowns.

The third quarter was scoreless, but the Albright defense made two stands in the period to maintain its lead. Widener took its opening drive of the half into the red zone. On 4th-and-2 from the 12, Widener elected to go for it, but quarterback Alex Krivda was sacked by Nico Williams to end the threat. An Albright fumble gave the ball right back to Widener at the Albright 35.  On the sixth play of the drive, Isaac got his first pick of the day at the Alrbight 1 to once again preserve the 19-3 lead.

Isaac's second pick near the end of the third quarter set up the Lions at the Widener 30. On 3rd-and-goal from the Widener 1, Vignola was on the other end of the equation as he caught a 1-yard pass from Dickerson to make it 26-3. Widener scored a touchdown but missed the PAT to make it 26-9. Albright finished off the scoring with a 17-yard touchdown run by Josh Davis with 5:47 left to make it 33-9.

The Albright defense held Widener to 11 yards rushing. Will Harrison led the defense with eight tackles. Rich Kuhn was one of several Lions defenders with five tackles. All five of his were tackles-for-loss.
