Randolph-Macon Tops No. 11 Women's Hoops, 70-66

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Devan Horka notched a double-double 16 points and 12 rebounds, but no. 11 Albright suffered its first loss of the season as Randolph-Macon defeated the Lions 70-66 on Friday in Crenshaw Gym.

Randolph-Macon used a fourth-quarter run to pull away from Albright after controlling majority of the first half.

The Yellow Jackets puzzled the Lions defense from the beginning of the game jumping out a 15-2 lead halfway through the first quarter. Albright struggled to find a rhythm throughout the half as Randolph-Macon outshot the Lions 33-20.

Albright, who trailed as much as 18 points in the first half, battled back in the third quarter outshooting the Yellow Jackets 31-16 to take a two-point lead into the final quarter. Jayne Joyce dished the ball to Horka who made a jumper with two seconds left on the clock to put the Lions ahead 51-49.

A layup from Horka extended the Lions lead with 9:19 remaining in the fourth quarter. Randolph-Macon jumped back on top less than two minutes when Kelsey Wisner sunk a three pointer to put the Yellow Jackets up 55-53.

The Lions knotted the score at 66 after Alysha Lofton made two free throws with 54 seconds left in the quarter. Randolph-Macon closed out the game on a 4-0 run to earn its first victory and improve to 1-1 on the season.

Despite shooting 12.5 percent behind the arc, Randolph-Macon shot 42.9 percent from the paint and made 14-of-20 free throw attempts to earn the win in the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Classic.

Kelly Williams finished with a game-high 19 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and two assists, while Kareema Conteh added 12 points and Michal Ross had 10 points, five rebounds, and two steals.

Albright, who suffered its first loss of the season and dropped to 1-1, shot 42 percent from the floor and made 21-of-28 free throw attempts, but turned the ball over 21 times.

Lofton had 10 points, nine rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks, while Shannon Thomas added nine points. Joyce finished with seven points, three rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Albright continues its tournament action on Saturday when the Lions face Lynchburg at 2 p.m.
