No. 19 Women's Hoops Tops Neumann 64-50

READING, Pa. – Junior Devan Horka led two players in double figures with 18 points leading No. 19 Albright to a 64-50 win over Neumann on Tuesday in the Bollman Center.

Horka, who also recorded eight rebounds, went 7-of-10 from the floor and was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line to pace the Lions. She also added two assists in 21 minutes of action.

Albright, which improved to 3-1 on the season, also received 10 points from Alysha Lofton.

The Lions shot 45.1 percent, including 62.5 percent in the third quarter, from the floor in the game. Albright heavily defended Neumann holding the Knights to a 23.5 percent from the floor in the game, including holding the Knights without a field goal in the second quarter.

AAliya Hayes was one of three Neumann players to score double figures, and led the team with 17 points. Nafisa Saunders and Alex Fernandez each added 11 points apiece for Neumann, which dropped to 2-2.

Albright took control of the game early on after Neumann knotted the score at 4. MiKayla Lea's field goal handed the Lions a lead with 5:28 left in the first quarter that would never be relinquished. Albright extended its lead to seven after scoring six points in a matter of 43 seconds. Zaria Mohamed got things started making a defensive rebound and then laid the ball in for Albright after Lea dished the ball to her. Jane Joyce stole the ball from the Knights and then drove down the court for an easy two points. After a Neumann basket, Lea was fouled on the ensuing play and went a perfect 2-of-2 from the free throw line to end the Lions 7-2 run.

It was all Albright in the second quarter as the Lions outscored their opponent 9-2 with Nina Mazzarelli leading the way. Mazzarelli drained a three-pointer to extend the Lions lead to eight less than two minutes into the second quarter. Not long after, the junior went to the free throw line. With 7:49 on the clock, she made both shots to put the Lions up 22-12. A layup from Kewa Gray and two free throws from Lofton handed Albright a 26-14 lead heading into halftime.

The Lions defense played superb in the second quarter holding the Knights without a field goal. Hayes scored the only two points for Neumann from the free throw line.

The third quarter was the Horka show as the junior went 5-of-6 from the field and scored 12 of her 18 points. The Lions opened the second half on a 6-0 run after Horka and Shannon Thomas both made layups, and Joyce drained a jumper to extend the Lions lead to 36-18. Albright continued to keep Neumann at bay as the Knights watched the Lions lead continue to grow. Horka scored four straight points in the final minute to give Albright a 23-point lead, its largest of the night.

Despite entering the final quarter trailing 22 points, the Knights continued to play scrappy in the final 10 minutes and outscored Albright 21-13. Both teams traded baskets in the opening minutes before Neumann went on a 13-2 run to pull within 10. Hayes led the Knights with nine points during the 3:14 minute stretch. Thomas shifted the momentum back to Albright's side when the senior made her only three-pointer of the night. Horka sealed the Lions win with two free throws in the final seconds of the game.

Albright opens conference play on Wednesday, November 30, when the team travels to Maryland to take on Stevenson. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
