SAN JUAN, P.R. – The Albright men's basketball team got 11 points from
Fred Rowles and 10 points from
DeJuan Smith, but the Lions fell to Emory & Henry, 71-61, on the first day of the team's Puerto Rico tour Monday.
Calvert Gantz scored all eight of his points in the first half for the Lions. He scored six of the team's first eight points as the Lions jumped out to an 8-5 lead. Emory & Henry held the Lions without a bucket for nearly four minutes later in the half, however, as it was able to turn that early deficit into a seven-point lead with five minutes to play. A three pointer by
Garrett Oplinger along with baskets by
Brandon Lindsay and Gantz kept the deficit at six heading into the intermission, 28-22.
Smith filled the stat sheet in the second half. He amassed eight of his 10 points, all six of his rebounds and four of his five steals in the second period. Rowles chipped in with nine of his 11 points in the second.
Rappoport and
Jaylin Calloway cut an eight-point deficit in half with a bucket apiece to make it 52-48 E&H with 7:45 left in regulation. At that point, however, E&H went on a 9-2 run to take a 61-50 lead with 3:33 left. A Rowles three pointer helped get the lead back into single digits, and a Smith jumper pulled it back into a two-possession game at 67-61 with 52 seconds to play. E&H hit all four of its free throw in the final minute, however, to give it a 10-point victory, 71-61.
Albright finishes its Puerto Rico tour tomorrow afternoon against Chatham.
