Harris, Mazzarelli Lead Lions Past Mustangs

READING, Pa. – Senior Kelecia Harris scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and sophomore Nina Mazzarelli hit a three-pointer with 12.1 seconds to play leading 10th-ranked Albright to a 64-60 MAC Commonwealth victory over Stevenson on Senior Day in the Bollman Center on Saturday.

Stevenson had whittled an eight-point Albright lead down to two points before Mazzarelli drilled a three-pointer off a feed from Alysha Lofton that gave the Lions a 63-58 lead with 12.1 seconds to play.

Caitlin Roy converted a layup for the Mustangs with 4.5 seconds to play to cut the lead to 63-60, but Harris made 1-of-2 free throw attempts with 1.3 seconds left in the game to secure the victory for the Lions.

It was a record-setting afternoon for the Lions as they improved to 22-2 overall and 14-1 in the MAC Commonwealth. The 22 wins breaks the school record set by last year's team and the 14 conference wins is also a new school record topping the previous record of 13 set by the 2014-15 Lions.

Harris celebrated Senior Day in a big way as she became just the second player in Albright history to surpass 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. She joins Alison Koch as the only players in school history to surpass those milestones and has 1,502 career points and 1,007 career rebounds.

Saturday also marked Senior Day for Emily O'Donnell and she finished the game with six points and seven rebounds and was 3-of-4 from the field.

Albright, which extended its winning streak to 10 straight, trailed after one quarter 14-13, but used a late run to take the lead for good.

A jumper by Imani Sanders gave the Mustangs a 25-24 lead with 4:59 to play in the second quarter before the Lions closed the half on an 11-0 run.

Harris started the run with a layup and Mazzarelli followed with a three-pointer that gave the Lions a 29-25 lead with 3:55 to play in the second quarter.

Morgan Harris made two free throws and Mazzarelli added a free throw to up the lead to 32-25 at the 2:01 mark of the second quarter.

Mazzarelli capped the run with a three-pointer giving the Lions a 35-25 lead at the intermission.

Albright took its largest lead of the game at 45-29 when Harris scored inside at the 4:51 mark of the third quarter.

A layup by Mazzarelli gave the Lions a 49-36 lead with 3:10 to play in the third before the Mustangs rallied with a 7-0 run to get to within 49-43 with 1:24 remaining.

Lofton responded with a three-point play for the Lions to push the lead to 52-43, but Sara Tarbert scored inside to bring the Mustangs to within 52-45 after three quarters of play.

Stevenson, which fell to 12-9 overall and 9-5 in conference play, got five consecutive points from Kaitlyn VanTash to open the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 52-50 with 8:24 left to play.

Shannon Thomas jump started a 6-0 Albright run with a layup that extended the Lions lead to 58-50 at the 6:19 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Lions held a 60-54 lead following a layup by Lofton, but VanTash scored two layups to cut the lead to 60-58 with 1:49 to play setting the stage for Mazzarelli's game-changing three-pointer.

Lofton also finished with a double-double for the Lions as she had 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Mazzarelli finished with 14 points.

Stevenson was led by VanTash who scored a game-high 23 points, but was the only Mustang to reach double figures. Tarbert finished with eight points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

Albright will close out the regular season when it visits Alvernia for a MAC Commonwealth game on Tuesday (Feb. 16) at 6 p.m.
