COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. –
Matthew Lomady,
Cam Cetrone and
Derek Stump each scored a goal and recorded an assist, but 13th-ranked Ursinus used an 8-1 second half run to defeat Albright 14-6 in the Lions season opener on Saturday at Patterson Field.
Albright trailed 6-3 at halftime, but Ursinus scored eight consecutive goals to open the second half to pull away from the Lions.
The loss spoiled the Albright coaching debut of
Jamie Lockard who begins his first season on the Lion sideline in 2016.
Ursinus, which also was playing its season opener, received a career-day from sophomore Gerard Brown. Brown had three goals and five assists to finish with a school-record eight points to lead the Bears to the win.
Ursinus also received three goals from Logan Panaccione and Tucker Noel. Brian Neff picked up the victory in net for the Bears as he made seven saves.
Nate Rhoads,
James Egleston and
Nick Tonno each added a goal for Albright, while
James Lettieri finished with six ground balls and an assist.
Ryan Aler made his first career start in goal for Albright and finished with 11 saves.
Ursinus piled up 39 shots on the afternoon including 13 in the first quarter as it raced out to a 4-1 lead.
Brown got the Bears on the board just 1:01 into the game when he scored an unassisted goal. Ursinus pushed the lead to 2-0 when Rob Dewey scored off a Brown assist at the 12:47 mark of the first quarter.
Albright got on the board when Egleston beat Neff at the 3:45 mark cutting the lead to 2-1.
Ursinus increased the lead to 4-1 before Rhoads scored with 11:04 to play in the second quarter to bring the Lions to within 4-2.
Panaccione and Noel increased the Bears lead to 6-2, but Cetrone scored off a feed from Stump to cut the lead to 6-3 at halftime.
Ursinus stretched the lead to 10-3 by outscoring the Lions 4-0 in the third quarter.
Lomady scored at the 13:05 mark of the fourth quarter to bring Albright to within 10-4, but Ursinus answered with four straight goals to increase the Bears lead to 14-4.
Stump and Tonno scored in the final minute of play for Albright.
Albright will return to action on Saturday (Feb. 27) when it hosts Marymount in its home opener at 3 p.m. in Shirk Stadium.
