SCRANTON, Pa. -- Entering the NCAA Tournament, few people outside of the mid-atlantic region had likely heard of Albright and the Lions were not expected to make a deep tournament run. But with two tournament victories and by taking No. 7 Tufts to the limit, Albright has certainly made a name for itself in the Division III basketball world.
Senior
Kelecia Harris scored 15 points and sophomore
Nina Mazzarelli added 13 points, but Tufts used a run late in the third period to overtake the Lions on its way to a 62-49 victory in the NCAA Tournament Sectionals on Friday in the John Long Center.
Albright trailed 25-24 at the break, but found itself down 31-26 with 7:10 to play in the third quarter.
The Lions rallied to regain the lead as Harris, Mazzarelli and
Alysha Lofton each converted layups to give Albright a 32-31 lead with 2:25 to play in the third quarter.
Michela North scored on a short jumper to put the Jumbos back in front 33-32, but Mazzarelli answered with a reverse layup that gave the Lions a 34-33 lead with just 1:49 to play in the quarter.
Tufts then responded with an 8-0 run that turned the tide in the game.
Lauren Dillon and Emma Roberson each connected on three-pointers and Maura Folliard added a jumper to give the Jumbos a 41-34 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Harris opened the fourth quarter with a layup for the Lions, but Dillon hit another three-pointer to spark a 6-0 run that pushed the Tufts lead to 47-36 at the 6:27 mark of the quarter.
Facing its largest deficit of the tournament at that time, Albright responded like it has all year long.
Emily O'Donnell scored back-to-back baskets inside and Harris made a pair of free throws to trim the lead to 47-42 with 4:29 left in the game.
Folliard answered with a three-pointer for the Jumbos, but Lofton countered with a layup to bring the Lions to with 50-44 at the 3:57 mark.
Tufts then reeled off a 6-0 run that pushed the lead to 54-44 with 2:29 left in the contest.
Albright climbed to within 56-47 on a three-point play by O'Donnell, but the Jumbos made 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to close out the game.
